 DELLA MAE

Della Mae is a GRAMMY-nominated all-woman string band featuring founding members Celia Woodsmith (lead vocalist/guitarist) and 2-time Grand National champion fiddle player Kimber Ludiker, along with guitarist Avril Smith, and two-time IBMA Bass Player of the Year Vickie Vaughn.

Hailing from across North America, and reared in diverse musical styles, Della Mae is one of the most charismatic and engaging roots bands touring today. They have traveled to over 30 countries spreading peace and understanding through music. Their mission as a band is to showcase top female musicians, and to improve opportunities for women and girls through advocacy, mentorship, programming, and performance.

Their live shows are foot-stomping, crowd-pleasing riots, full of the kind of high-octane instrumental skills that the band – now in its twelfth year and its third incarnation – was always intended to showcase. - The Guardian

Everyone who auditions and commits to the rehearsal and production schedule will be cast in the show. Regular rehearsals will be Mondays and Thursdays, 6 - 9 pm. After-School classes for ages 6 - 14 begin September 15 and will run for ten weeks this fall, culminating in a “Share Week” November 17 - 20. Most classes run 4:50 -5:50 pm.

Renowned visual artist and Yale alum Leo Villareal ’90 will present Celestial Garden (Yale), a new exhibition in The Dome at Yale Schwarzman Center. This never-before-exhibited artwork features an original soundscape and employs a suite of ten projectors that map the entire dome’s intrados. Villareal, whose work explores the physicality of light in both the spatial and temporal dimensions, uses custom software to orchestrate the perpetually evolving, abstract compositions, inspired by nature’s intricate, ever-changing patterns. Plush carpets and seating allow a contemplative pause for viewers to be immersed in a dynamic and continuously unfolding interplay of light and sound.

Free and open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12-6pm with extended hours on Thursdays until 8pm.

Join us for an evening of introvert-friendly socializing at Panera Bread in the Hamden Plaza!

Arrive around 7:00 to check in and get settled. We'll begin our dedicated hour of reading around 7:15. Afterward, feel free to stick around and chat. We usually wind up talking about what we've been reading.

This is a low-key event with a small group of friendly people and no pressure to read any particular book or genre. Hope to see you there!

In this multi-week workshop, participants will learn to forge their own custom chef’s knife and paring knife from high-carbon or stainless steel. Over the course of four sessions, you’ll explore the chemistry and craftsmanship behind blade creation—from raw steel to finished, functional kitchen tools. You’ll also gain hands-on experience using the tools of both the metal and wood shops to shape, assemble, and finish your knives for long-term performance.

This is a four-part class held weekly on Tuesdays beginning September 2.

What to Expect

Each week builds on the last as you work through the full knife-making process:

  • Week 1 – Profiling & Heat Treatment
  • Shape your raw steel and heat treat it to alter the metal’s chemistry for hardness and durability. Learn about blade anatomy and knife styles.
  • Week 2 – Beveling & Rough Shaping
  • Begin forming the cutting edge and refining the geometry of your blades using belt grinders and other metalworking tools.
  • Week 3 – Handle Shaping & Assembly
  • Design and create custom handles using woodworking tools, then attach them to your blades for a complete, ergonomic fit.
  • Week 4 – Finishing & Edge Work
  • Refine your blades, sharpen them, and learn how to care for your finished knives to maintain sharpness and longevity.

This is a hands-on, skill-building workshop. Expect to work with kilns, grinders, sanders, and saws in a supportive and guided environment.

Skills You’ll Acquire

• Understanding of blade metallurgy and heat treatment

• Use of kilns, grinders, buffing wheels, drill presses, and woodworking tools

• Knife profiling, beveling, and edge forming

• Handle shaping and knife assembly

• Knife care and long-term maintenance

What’s Provided

• High-carbon or stainless steel blanks

• Handle materials (wood, adhesives, and hardware)

• Access to metal and woodshop tools and equipment

• Instruction and support across all four sessions

Who Should Attend

Ideal for beginners and intermediate makers interested in metalwork, bladesmithing, or custom kitchen tools. Whether you’re a home cook, hands-on learner, or DIY enthusiast, this class will guide you through the rewarding process of knife making—start to finish.

Prerequisites/Safety Information

No prior knife-making experience required. All necessary tools, materials, and safety instruction will be provided in class.

This is a four-part class held on consecutive Tuesdays: September 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd.

Teens are asked to pre-register for one of the two audition evenings, to arrive on time, and plan to stay for the entire time. Everyone who auditions and commits to the rehearsal and production schedule will be cast in the show. Regular rehearsals will be Mondays and Thursdays, 6 - 9 pm. Performances will be November 13 - 15 and November 21 - 22.

Middletown Public School students may complement their class experience with Oddbridge, an extended day program which provides transport from Middletown schools to the Playhouse, a snack, and supervised arts activities, games and homework help before classes start. This year Oddbridge will run Monday through Thursday, September 15 - November 20, and will resume for a Special Mini Production Intensive Monday - Friday, December 1 - December 12. The program provides special programs and field trips on early dismissal days.

Separated by 2,781 miles and on two different continents, Iraqi and Nigerian Christians share similar stories of persecution. From 2014-2018, portions of Northern Iraq were under the control of the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and many religious minorities, including Christians, experienced persecution and violence as a result. In the northern and central portions of Nigeria, violence towards Christians and other minority groups has also increased in recent years at the hands of Boko Haram and other groups.

The Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center is honored to share the stories of those displaced in Iraq and Nigeria through Among the Persecuted and Displaced — a collection of photographs taken by Stephen Rasche. The Knights of Columbus has sponsored some of Rasche’s work in both countries, bringing to light the atrocities inflicted on those persecuted for their faith.

In these four drawing sessions children, ages 7-11, learn the Seven Lines of Design to get comfortable observing lines and patterns in their environments and then designing with them.  One session will take their newfound line/pattern experiences into the world of Zentangle learning 12-15 basic “tangles” or unique patterns which they will draw on tiles. Copies of the book: Zentangle Basics is provided for reference. In the third session, children engage in a still life project. They learn to draw several objects using contour lines or the simple outline of an object. These drawings are cut-out and then arranged on paper to compose a still life. This class is inspired by the collages of Picasso, the paper-cuts of Matisse and the still life paintings of Cezanne. The final session prepares children for the October painting classes. They study Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh discussing his brushstrokes, lines and movement. They will use their previous study of lines and patterns for the crescent moon, stars, ghosts and wind adding a bonfire and pumpkins to celebrate the season.  All materials included. See photos for samples of projects described.

Sharon Lee Mullen-Reynolds knew in High School that she was to be an Art teacher. That is exactly what she did; for 36 years she taught Visual Art in the city of New Haven. Her career hi-light was teaching 22 years at the Betsy Ross Arts Magnet Middle School. During her tenure there she was a published Fellow at Yale N.H.Teachers Institute for 2 years, the Department Chairperson for 8 years and creator of As Far As The Eye Can See a school-wide art exhibit.

Since her retirement in 2016, she has been attending numerous art exhibits and installations locally and in NYC, specifically Frida Kahlo’s exhibit at the Brooklyn Art Museum which led her to create Frida- inspired floral headpieces. In 2017 she started The Kindness Rock art installation at the Branford Festival.

Sharon is an artist who believes that art can heal your soul. In 2022 she sold her headpieces at the Ukrainian Roman Catholic church for the benefit of Ukraine’s War effort and donated 5 Ukrainian Strong “Petals for Peace” paintings to raise additional funds. These paintings were showcased on Channel 8 news.

In addition to her headpieces, Sharon works in mixed-media, crafts, collage, and watercolor landscape en plein air. Sharon’s artwork has been exhibited at City-Wide Open Studios, The ARTS Council, Calligraphers Guild, and is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook, Connecticut.

Hey writers! We'll be meeting in the indoor seating area at the MOTW Cafe on Crown Street in New Haven! The in person meetings run differently from the online ones. We'll do an initial check-in at 7pm with introductions, then do timed independent writing for an hour. After the hour is up we can chat about what we worked on, socialize a bit, or even just say so long and thanks for the hour of writing. Shut Up & Write is a writing accountability group and is not a venue for workshopping, however you are more than welcome to set up workshopping, cowriting, etc sessions with people you meet at the events. The Shut Up & Write website, shutupwrite.com, also has writing challenges as well as additional resources available.

Event Timeline:

  • 7:00pm: Announcements and Introductions
  • 7:15pm (earlier if we finish intros quickly): Silent timed writing time for 1 hour
  • 8:15pm: Check-in following silent writing, clean up materials

***MOTW CLOSES AT 8:30 PM***

You are welcome to arrive prior to 7pm for additional socializing or focused writing time. The hosts (April, Anna and Leon) make an effort to be there early as well.

Hope to see you there!

Please reach out to April, Anna or Leon via Meetup with any questions. The venue does not have information about the Meetup group, please do not harass them.

--Note: You are heavily encouraged to patronize the establishment at each visit. These meetings are not affiliated with the business where they take place, but venues have been nice enough to host our groups. Purchasing an item is not a requirement to participate in the group, however the venue has the right to remove or refuse people at their discretion --

Reminder - please be covid safe while in person. Respect any mask mandates in place and maintain social distancing guidelines as put forth by the CDC

Registration is now open for Fall Classes at Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater, located at 128 Washington Street in Middletown! Beginning September 8th, classes in theater and circus will be offered for toddlers to 20 year olds. Teenagers are invited to audition for our fall mainstage production.

Teen Repertory Company (ages 14 - 20) will hold auditions for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet on September 8 and 11, 6 - 9 pm. This is a unique opportunity to work with ARTFARM Artistic Director and Shakespeare specialist Marcella Trowbridge on one of the great works of the western canon.

Circophony Teen Circus (ages 12 - 20) offers serious circus training for young performers. No previous experience is required. Tuesday evenings, 6:30 - 8:30 pm is Acro Focus with Naja Muller, including stretching, flexibility, partner acrobatics, tumbling, mini-tramp and contortion. Wednesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 pm, is Juggling Plus with Joel Melendez, featuring juggling, balancing, rola bola, unicycles, rolling globe, diabolo, flower sticks and other forms of object manipulation & performance skills. Students may register for one or both evenings.

For our youngest Oddfellows, Saturday Classes feature Acrobabies (ages 15 months - under 3 years with caregiver; 9:15 - 9:55 am); Mixed-Up Fairy Tales (ages 3 - 6, 10 -10:55 am); Circrobatics (ages 3 - 6, 11 - 11:55 am); and Circrobalance (ages 5 - 8, noon - 1 pm). Classes start September 13 and continue through a Share Day on November 22 (10 weeks total - no classes October 11). All Saturday classes are taught by Meg Berritta.

After-School classes for ages 6 - 14 begin September 15 and will run for ten weeks this fall, culminating in a “Share Week” November 17 - 20. Most classes run 4:50 -5:50 pm.

Stage One classes for ages 6 - 8 include Intro to Shakespeare (Bard for Beginners); Circus I; Heroes and Villains; and Contortion and Flexibility (open to ages 6 - 11)

Stage Two classes for ages 9 - 11 include Acting in Motion; Circus II; Getting Creative With Shakespeare; Story to Stage; Contortion and Flexibility (open to ages 6 - 11); and Hip Hop Dance (open to ages 9 - 14).

Stage Three classes for ages 12 - 14 include Theater Design; Introduction to Commedia dell’ Arte; Theater Improvisation: Scenes and Games; and Complete Actor III (all of these classes meet 4:30 - 5:50 pm), as well as Hip Hop Dance (this class is for ages 9 - 14 and meets 4:50 - 5:50 pm).

For more details on times, tuition and class descriptions, please go to www.oddfellows.org . If you have specific questions, email info@oddfellows.org or call (860) 347-6143. Financial Aid is available for all programs. It is Oddfellows Playhouse policy that the arts should be available to every young person regardless of ability to pay - no one is turned away for lack of funds.

Oddfellows Playhouse, founded in 1975, is Connecticut’s oldest and largest performing arts program for young people. Oddfellows programs are made possible with support from the Middletown Commission on the Arts; Connecticut Office of the Arts/DECD; City of Middletown; The Fund for Greater Hartford; American Savings Foundation; State of Connecticut Judicial Branch (Youth Violence Prevention); Middletown Youth Services Bureau; Community Foundation of Middlesex County; Liberty Bank Foundation; Middletown Health Department; Maximilian E. & Marion O. March 22 – September 7, 2025 | Exhibition open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm with free parking and admission EXCEPT Friday, April 18 (Good Friday); Saturday, April 19 (Holy Saturday); Sunday, April 20 (Easter); Saturday, June 7; and Friday, July 4 (Independence Day).

In these 4 sessions children ages 7-11 years old learn dyeing techniques including how to mix and use colorful dyes to design their own beautiful silk scarves to give as gifts or to keep for themselves.  No previous experience necessary.

Cathy Lovell’s lifelong interest in the creative arts continues to guide her through a gratifying career as both art educator and studio artist. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire and Wesleyan University, Cathy has taught in the Newton, MA, Greenwich, CT and East Lyme, CT public school systems. She has also taught private classes in various fields including stained glass, jewelry making and silver work, enameling, ceramics, glass bead making, and quilting.

In the interest of furthering her own education, Cathy received a scholarship to attend the Pilchuck Glass School where she worked with Dale Chihuly and Patrick Reyntiens. Her interest in felting began with a workshop led by Lynne Ocone at the Guilford Art Center. Cathy is a member of the Northeast Felt makers Guild where she has had the privilege of participating in classes given by world renowned felt makers. Cathy credits her friend and fellow felt maker Catherine Stebinger with sharing ongoing creative energy, inspiration, and encouragement. Her work is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook, Connecticut.

Join exhibition cocurators Elizabeth Wyckoff and Timothy Young to learn more about William Blake: Burning Bright, which showcases the YCBA’s impressive collection of works by William Blake (1757–1827). What made the artist and poet unique? The curators provide an overview of Blake's career as presented in the exhibition and then focus on how he defied the norms to create the highly original “illuminated books” at the core of this show. Blake’s invention of a method for printing both image and text from a single copper plate resulted in an unprecedented fusion of art. Intimate in scale and created to be experienced in book form, the colorful pages draw the reader into Blake’s distinctive worldview. Richard Brodhead, the A. Bartlett Giamatti Professor of English Emeritus and Interim Director at the Yale Center for British Art, moderates the program.

THE EMPTY POCKETS

Chicago blues quartet The Empty Pockets harness a joyful friction between Americana, folk, and rock ‘n’ roll spiked with roots soul. The Chicago quartet—Josh Solomon [guitar, vocals], Erika Brett [keyboards, vocals], Nate Bellon [bass, vocals], and Adam Balasco [drums]—lean on an unspoken, yet airtight musical dialogue honed by countless miles on the road, performances alongside the likes of Kenny Loggins, a procession of fan favorite releases (including two, #1 debuts), and a wealth of memories together. The musicians shine brighter than ever in 2025, touring on the strength of their top-of-the-charts releases. The band has never sounded better on their latest full length, a beautifully captured concert album, Live In Buffalo.

& Marion O.

 Other Asterisms by Deborah Hesse

August 1 - September 7, 2025

Located in The Workshop Gallery, Building 3.

Opening Reception on Friday, August 1st from 3-6PM

Artist Talk on Friday, September 5th at 6PM

Regular Gallery Hours from 12-4 pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Other Asterisms is a solo exhibition by Deborah Hesse featuring sculptural, light-responsive wall works made from industrial and everyday materials. Together, the pieces form a constellation—charting imagined links between the material and immaterial, the physical and virtual. Evoking underwater ecosystems, celestial maps, and microscopic life, these luminous, biomorphic forms blur boundaries and invite reflection on unseen systems beyond the known world.

Deborah Hesse is a multimedia artist and independent curator based in New Haven, CT. She holds a B.A. from Smith College and an M.A. in Painting and Printmaking from the University of New Mexico, where she was a Tamarind Institute Fellow in Lithography. Her honors include a Connecticut Office of the Arts Individual Artist Fellowship and a Regional Project Initiative Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Hesse was an international artist-in-residence at the Hongti Art Center in Busan, South Korea, where she created a solo exhibition based on research into traditional seaweed cultivation. She has also received Rhode Island and Connecticut Visual Artist Sea Grant Awards, as well as artist residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, GreenWave, and Weir Farm Art Center. Her work has been shown internationally and nationally, with exhibitions in South Korea, New York, New Mexico, and Connecticut—including venues such as Real Art Ways, Housatonic Museum, University of Connecticut, Artspace, University of New Haven, Silvermine Art Gallery, and Governors Island Art Fair.

Full Artist Statement:

Other Asterisms features luminous, shaped, biomorphic wall works organically arrayed across the gallery. As a group, these abstractions evoke celestial constellations, bioluminescent aquatic forms, and microscopic life—confounding scale and seeking to make the immaterial visible.

This constellation of forms emerges through a layered process that blends digital fabrication with intuitive, material-based experimentation. I work with industrial byproducts—mainly sign- making materials—alongside birch wood, photo fragments, acrylic, and ink to create dimensional wall pieces that function as spatial paintings.

The initial shapes are inspired by natural forms and phenomena—seaweed pressings, fluid dynamics, the contours of spills—drawn from local specimens and debris gathered on daily walks. These fragments are translated into digital outlines and cut with a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machine, then altered by hand with paint, adhesive color gels, and embedded imagery—merging precision with improvisation.

By combining fabricated and hand-altered materials, I explore how light, transparency, and surface interact to produce shifting forms and layered visual experiences. The planar, layered structures also reflect how digital life flattens and fragments information, reducing complexity into fleeting impressions.

These works probe the shifting boundary between physical and digital realities, drawing on the materials’ signage origins to question what is real, simulated, or invented. The process— manipulating synthetic materials into organic, responsive forms—reflects a broader interest in transformation, perception, and the increasingly fluid spaces we inhabit between tangible and virtual realms.

Together, the pieces form a kind of sensory map—linking the digital, natural, and constructed to explore connections between the infinite and the everyday.

This is a unique opportunity to work with ARTFARM Artistic Director and Shakespeare specialist Marcella Trowbridge on one of the great works of the western canon.

After-School classes for ages 6 - 14 begin September 15 and will run for ten weeks this fall, culminating in a “Share Week” November 17 - 20. Most classes run 4:50 -5:50 pm.
