POC Makers Woodworking: Cutting Board Building for BHM

In this hands-on woodworking workshop honoring Black History Month, participants will craft their own custom wooden cutting board while learning foundational woodworking skills in a supportive, POC-only affinity space. Led by Akeera, this workshop celebrates the long and powerful legacy of Black and POC makers, builders, and craftspeople. You’ll move through each stage of the process to create a beautiful, functional 10”x12” cutting board to take home.
What to Expect
This workshop is offered as a POC-only affinity class, open to participants who identify as people of color. Expect a guided introduction to woodworking with plenty of hands-on time. Akeera will demonstrate each step before participants try it themselves—from surfacing lumber to cutting, gluing, shaping, and sanding. You’ll work with essential shop tools including the planer, table saw, chop saw, and sander. Once shaped, your board will be finished with food-safe mineral oil to enhance the natural grain. A scheduled lunch break mid-session offers time to rest and connect with fellow participants. All materials and safety gear are provided.
