Administered by the Council of Heads of College, the Creative and Performing Arts (CPA) Awards support on-campus dramatic, musical, dance, video or film productions, literary publications, and exhibitions in each residential college. These projects are supported by the Sudler Fund, the Welch Art Fund, and the Bates Fund.
Two Yale student recipients of of this award will receive a residency to realize their dream project in The Dome, with the support of Yale Schwarzman Center staff and resources.
Creative & Performing Arts (CPA) Awards
This class is an opportunity to learn about drawing, learning to observe and see the subject in traditional and new ways. A different drawing idea will be introduced and explored each week. Students can bring an image to work from or draw from a still life set-up. (provided by teacher). There will be plenty of individual guidance and help for each student. Taught by an accomplished and professional artist Mike Berlinski.
Session 1 classes will be held on Mondays for 6 weeks - 9-22, 9-29, 10-6, 10-20, 10-27, & 11-3-25.

carbine, and a higher level of confidence in their ability to effectively operate and wield it.
It is encouraged to run this class with the gear you would normally have in home defense or self defense situation. LE are encouraged to run this class in your duty gear.

LIFETIME/LIFELINE: A Collaboration
Explore the shapes and patterns of the natural world through the art of papercutting.
Students will learn to design and cut original compositions using freehand techniques with precision tools and fine scissors. Beginning with simple forms and gradually advancing in complexity, all work is created at a manageable 5 x 7″ scale. Finished papercuts are assembled into a hand-crafted softcover book featuring framed pockets to hold and display the artwork. A reusable page template allows for flexible expansion. The final result will be a beautifully bound collection of intricate, personal designs.
We will also take a field trip to a local professional paper cutter’s studio and gallery for a demonstration.
This is a course for both beginners and those with some experience. Many of the basic skills of bookbinding will be taught including measuring, cutting, folding, and gluing.
Enrollment in this class includes one 3 hour monitored practice session a week.
Tuition for this class includes a fee of $8 for basic materials provided by CAW.

Whether you’re looking to relax, learn something new, or rekindle a love for art, this class is the perfect starting point. No prior experience needed—just bring your curiosity and creativity!
Introduction To Drawing
This class is for beginners eager to learn all aspects of pottery, as well as returnees who wish to hone their skills. Although the primary focus is on wheel throwing, we will also explore hand-building and ways to combine the two disciplines. Time will additionally be spent on the importance of trimming and glazing.
Wear clothes that can get dirty.
Pottery tool kits are available for sale in the studio for $27 and firing fees are $3.50/pound. Payable by credit card, cash, or check.
Includes one 3-hour weekly practice session during monitored practice hours on a first-come, first-served basis and you are encouraged to take advantage of this.
Beginning/ Intermediate Pottery
Don’t be intimidated any longer—come learn to paint. This class will unfold the mysteries of painting by introducing students to the basics: selecting materials, setting up a palette, handling paint, and composing a picture. The class will emphasize learning to see what you wish to paint with the goal of rendering form clearly in terms of color and design. Come to the first class ready to paint.

Clinton Art Society Presents Elected Artists Exhibition
Develop your pottery skills as you focus on wheel-throwing techniques in stoneware and porcelain.
Lessons will cover both functional and decorative pottery with emphasis on classical forms as we know them. Students will be shown how to apply glazes and/or oxide washes to achieve desired results, such as combining glaze colors and the application of wood ash to create unexpected effects on their work. Wear clothes that can get dirty.
Intermediate and Advanced Pottery
This exhibition will be on view at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music’s Miller Hall at 406 Prospect Street, New Haven from October 9 - December 5 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12 - 4 p.m., except for Thanksgiving week, when the ISM is closed.
Lucasen Brown: Stanza presents a series of twenty intimate-scaled abstract paintings developed during Brown's time at Yale Institute of Sacred Music/Yale Divinity School (2023-2025). The exhibition also includes a selection of works on paper with corresponding poems by 2025 ISM graduate Emily Chan from a small book-length collaboration.
Each painting has an association for the artist: a life event, a place, a feeling, a person. Brown explores ways the painting process weaves memory, trauma and spiritual repair: "Wholeness, to me, is when I am just a painter in the world who allows a world of feeling into my abstract paintings—a place where everything belongs.” The paintings hold space for viewers to consider their own healing through faith, noticing, and remaining open to uncertainty.
Paint, for Brown, becomes both a surface and a subject. The artist hopes the paintings evoke corporeality, silence, interiority, and sacred everydayness. The repetition of marks on the painting surfaces is meditative and accretive.
The paintings are informed by textile, specifically Lenore Tawney's open-warp weavings; art movements including Minimalism and Pattern Painting and Decoration; and essays, namely Roland Barthes' theory of text and textile.
The exhibition traces the paintings’ transition from grid-based abstraction to a more intuitive and emotionally attuned process that pushes beyond the limitation of the grid. The artist realized his painting world, emotional and liberative, could no longer be confined to a grid.

About the exhibition:
Installed at the Schwarzman Center, “Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & in New Haven,” illuminates ongoing research that recovers the essential role of Black people throughout Yale and New Haven history. The exhibition puts back at the center of local storytelling people who have always been central to local history. It celebrates Black community building, resistance, and resilience on campus and in New Haven.
The show includes nearly one hundred images of Yale’s earliest Black students from the 1800s and early 1900s, many of whom had deep New Haven connections. The Schwarzman exhibition features compelling reproductions of photographs of New Haveners who were custodians of Yale. The Luke, Grimes, Creed, Park, and Bassett families, among the many people key to founding and sustaining Yale, and who are heralded in the show.
“Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & in New Haven” showcases the proposal, made and thwarted in 1831, to build a Black college in New Haven. It also highlights the successful efforts of Black students in the 1960s to establish the Afro-American Cultural Center and Afro-American Studies at Yale.
This exhibition brings forth knowledge kept alive in archives and memory for many centuries—even when the dominant culture chose to ignore, bury, or forget. It extends the work of the Yale and Slavery Research Project and follows from the exhibition, “Shining Light on Truth: New Haven, Yale and Slavery,” at the New Haven Museum from February 16, 2024 – March 1, 2025.
The exhibition team includes David Jon Walker ’23 MFA, lead designer, and Michael Morand ’87 ’93 M.Div., lead curator, with Timeica Bethel ’11, Robert Laird Brown, Jennifer Coggins, Mohamed Diallo ’26, Regina Mason, Hope McGrath, Carlynne Robinson, and Charles Warner, Jr.

It celebrates Black community building, resistance, and resilience on campus and in New Haven.
The show includes nearly one hundred images of Yale’s earliest Black students from the 1800s and early 1900s, many of whom had deep New Haven connections. The Schwarzman exhibition features compelling reproductions of photographs of New Haveners who were custodians of Yale. The Luke, Grimes, Creed, Park, and Bassett families, among the many people key to founding and sustaining Yale, and who are heralded in the show.
“Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & in New Haven” showcases the proposal, made and thwarted in 1831, to build a Black college in New Haven. It also highlights the successful efforts of Black students in the 1960s to establish the Afro-American Cultural Center and Afro-American Studies at Yale.
This exhibition brings forth knowledge kept alive in archives and memory for many centuries—even when the dominant culture chose to ignore, bury, or forget. It extends the work of the Yale and Slavery Research Project and follows from the exhibition, “Shining Light on Truth: New Haven, Yale and Slavery,” at the New Haven Museum from February 16, 2024 – March 1, 2025.

Bluegrass Jam at the Museum
Explore the art of black and white film photography.
Learn how to operate a 35mm camera, develop film, and print black and white images in the darkroom. We will also learn to analyze our images with a focus on light, composition, and creating meaning. Class time will include demonstrations, critiques, and guided lab work.
More advanced students are welcome to join and continue working on independent projects.
The class also includes an optional Friday evening open darkroom practice session where students can work on and refine the techniques discussed in class.
Tuition for this class includes a fee of $40 for basic materials provided by CAW.
Introduction to Black and White Analog Film Photography
Join us to draw or paint from a nude model. The 3-hour session includes mixed-length poses. These are monitored “open drawing” sessions; there is no instruction.
Students must register at least 48 hours in advance.
Working From A Live Model
Join EWMW artist in residence Kat Wiese in pulp mixing, papermaking, and bookbinding in a 5-week lab. Participants will learn how to make paper from both recycled and raw materials. Participants will be able to bring materials of their own and use both natural and synthetic materials on site, like pressed flowers, kraft paper, and recycled prints. Book binding methods will include accordion, French binding, and Celtic binding. Students will be instructed in how to make two 6 x 8 inch books using Celtic and French binding methods using the papers they made during the first two weeks. More advanced students, or those with existing creative projects, are welcome to join the course and work at their own pace on paper related projects.
All materials are provided. Students are encouraged to bring papers they may like to include in their books or use as recycled papers for pulp making.

Adult Workshop: "Paper Play" Experimental Lab
In this six-week, hands-on series, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of metalworking through guided projects and practice. You’ll learn the safe use of a MIG welder, angle grinder, and drill press while exploring the basics of shaping and joining steel. By the end of the course, each participant will complete a functional project of their choice—such as a small box with a lid or a broom with a dustpan—while gaining skills that can be applied to future metal fabrication projects.
This workshop meets Tuesdays, November 4 – December 9, from 6–9 PM.
What to Expect
Each session combines demonstrations with hands-on shop time, allowing you to build both confidence and practical skills. You’ll start with shop orientation and safety, then progress into welding, grinding, and cutting exercises. Once you’ve practiced the techniques, you’ll apply them to your own project. The series culminates with finishing work and tips for applying your new skills to future metalworking projects.

The annual exhibit highlights work by more than 30 accomplished artists. The opening reception is on September 25 from 4:30pm to 6:00pm and is free and open to the public.

This program supports sensory development, fine motor skills, and social interaction—come play, learn, and make a (little) mess with us!

From Frank Pepe’s original hat to celebrity-signed pizza boxes (including Gwyneth Paltrow and Yogi Berra!), if you love the crust, the crunch and the char of New Haven apizza, or simply have strong views on what comprises a good pie, you’ll find something to feed your personal pizza passion in the new exhibit “Pronounced Ah-Beetz,” open now at the New Haven Museum (NHM) through October 2027.
“Pronounced Ah-Beetz” examines the fun, the flavor and the history of pizza, including its origin as an affordable means of feeding workers in the fields of Italy, and how it became the food of the poor in the U.S. The Italian migration to New Haven gave way to Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana, which gave birth to Sally’s Apizza, while a mile away Tony’s Apizza became Modern. How these three establishments became among the most iconically loved pizza restaurants in the country is a major focus.
While the exhibit highlights the “Big 3” original apizza spots in New Haven, it also extends through the family tree of New Haven pizzerias to present a picture of family, food and community that includes a host of other local pizzerias, including: Ernie’s, Zuppardi’s, BAR, Zeneli’s, Olde World, and the Big Green Pizza Truck, among others.

You decide – explore multiple printmaking techniques and processes or deepen your practice in one area. Use etching, drypoint, woodcut, linocut, monotype, transfer prints, paper lithography, polymer plate lithography, collagraph, silk aquatint, transfer prints, or Chine-collé. Learn new techniques or connect printmaking to other artistic media.
Includes one 3-hour practice session per week during monitored practice hours.

This exhibition will be on view at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music’s Miller Hall at 406 Prospect Street, New Haven from October 9 - December 5 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12 - 4 p.m., except for Thanksgiving week, when the ISM is closed.
Lucasen Brown: Stanza presents a series of twenty intimate-scaled abstract paintings developed during Brown's time at Yale Institute of Sacred Music/Yale Divinity School (2023-2025). The exhibition also includes a selection of works on paper with corresponding poems by 2025 ISM graduate Emily Chan from a small book-length collaboration.
Each painting has an association for the artist: a life event, a place, a feeling, a person. Brown explores ways the painting process weaves memory, trauma and spiritual repair: "Wholeness, to me, is when I am just a painter in the world who allows a world of feeling into my abstract paintings—a place where everything belongs.” The paintings hold space for viewers to consider their own healing through faith, noticing, and remaining open to uncertainty.
Paint, for Brown, becomes both a surface and a subject. The artist hopes the paintings evoke corporeality, silence, interiority, and sacred everydayness. The repetition of marks on the painting surfaces is meditative and accretive.
The paintings are informed by textile, specifically Lenore Tawney's open-warp weavings; art movements including Minimalism and Pattern Painting and Decoration; and essays, namely Roland Barthes' theory of text and textile.
The exhibition traces the paintings’ transition from grid-based abstraction to a more intuitive and emotionally attuned process that pushes beyond the limitation of the grid. The artist realized his painting world, emotional and liberative, could no longer be confined to a grid.

Intro to Stained Glass: Create a Hanging Panel
The Yale Jazz Ensembles Big Band, Wayne Escoffery, Music Director, will celebrate the centennial of the birth of American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer Miles Davis during the 2025-26 academic year. Tonight’s concert will feature world premieres of big band arrangements for the Yale Jazz Ensembles Big Band by Michael Mossman , including Boplicity, Budo, and Deception, from Davis’ pioneering album “Birth of the Cool.”
“Birth of the Cool” is a compilation album of eleven tracks recorded by Davis’ nonet for the label over the course of three sessions during 1949 and 1950. Featuring unusual instrumentation and several notable musicians, the music consists of innovative arrangements influenced by Afro-American music and classical music techniques and marked a major development in post-bebop jazz. As the title suggests, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of “cool jazz.”

POST ANIMAL
When Post Animal stepped into the studio for their new album, it was the first time all six original members were in the studio together for nearly a decade. Three band members had recently relocated away from Chicago, not to mention Joe Keery having left the band in 2017 to focus on acting. In the end they started right back up at the beginning, rediscovering that uncompromising closeness of connection they all shared from those endless hours spent in practice spaces and the late-night diner runs that follow. Prolonged stretches of time together not only reinforced the strength of their friendship—it reinvigorated their music. “If you want to get one hour of good painting in, you have to have four hours of uninterrupted time,” David Lynch once said. The product of a few straight weeks together, IRON (due July 25th) not only finds them reunited with Keery but is the embodiment of 30 days of camaraderie and unbound musical exploration, their renewed connection ironclad.
After 2022’s sublime Love Gibberish, their first independent record, Post Animal found themselves sunk deeper into their work than ever before. They toured extensively, both on their own and with UK psych band Temples. By the time things settled down, guitarist Javi Reyes and drummer Wesley Toledo were back home in Chicago, while guitarist Matt Williams moved to Los Angeles, bassist Dalton Allison decamped for Ithaca, and multi-instrumentalist Jake Hirshland relocated to Brooklyn. “There was some burnout happening,” Allison says.
But then Keery showed up at a New York tour stop , and the idea was hatched that they cut another record—all six band members together again, for the first time since 2017’s When I Think of You in a Castle. “That was near the start of Stranger Things , and now with it kind of coming to an end in my own life, we all felt it'd be great to do something like that again,” Keery says. “It was a labor of love.” The group focused on the experience and ignored any pressure. “We all agreed that even if we went and just hung out, we’d be happy with it,” Toledo says. “There was a real positivity and optimism among us.” They would set up camp at the Indiana home of their friends, tucked into some woodlands.
The creativity driven by comfort is apparent from the opening instrumental track; “Malcolm’s Cooking” was recorded in part on a balcony overlooking the foliage, complete with the humid wind, insect whirring, and euphorically clinking bottles. Lead single “Last Goodbye” follows, a slow-loping look at the end of a relationship, a point in time somehow both uneasy and familiar. There’s a vintage AM radio glow to follow-up “Pie in the Sky”, a giddy-up bass and thumping percussion giving way to layered harmony. “Make me wanna sell my soul for just a bit of your shine/ How am I gonna fill this hole, if your heart ain’t mine?” they sigh in a fit of honest, unadorned adoration.
“This record felt like a revitalization of our friendships and our band,” Hirshland says. “We always work collaboratively, but it’s amazing how reintroducing Joe into the mix brought back that dynamic from 2017.” Keery agrees, noting both how close they’ve remained despite so much change. "I was just appreciative to be spending this time, knowing we might not get another chance,” he says. “The record reflects that enjoyment, and you can feel the fun."
Each of the six musicians brought in song ideas and took their turn taking the lead. In perhaps the most intimate example, “Maybe You Have To” opens with a voicemail of Toledo’s abuela prior to her passing, with the glistening track that follows staring down the pain of that loss. But even when IRON touches on heavy themes, Post Animal finds fluidity and strength in their compositions—a clear result of sharing so much time together. “It’s a return to ourselves, but down the road, feeling better than we ever have,” Reyes says.
The album uses that honed edge to push and pull at genre threads, from synthpop to folk, vintage radio rock to twitchy psychedelia. Whether in the tumbling, interlocking eighth notes of “Common Denominator” or the cloudlike, piano-driven title track, IRON lives deliciously in its moment. Or, as Hirshland explains it: “This is an exploration of being alive and in this group of friends.”
IRON puts the listener directly into the room with the band, freewheeling and experimental yet played with precision. That atmosphere should be palpable as the band hits the road with Keery’s Djo project, Toledo and Reyes pulling double duty as well by working in his backing band—the whole group getting to spend even more time together. “All of these creative forces coming together, it was like iron sharpening iron,” Allison says. “When we’re in proximity with one another, we make each other better.”

Two Yale student recipients of of this award will receive a residency to realize their dream project in The Dome, with the support of Yale Schwarzman Center staff and resources.

Whether it's to create unique crafts and clothing or simply shorten a hem, this 5-session workshop is designed to give you the basic tools you need to hit the ground running. From hand stitching to operating a sewing machine, instructor Deb Molloy will guide you as you gain hands-on experience. You will make a pillowcase and leave with a valuable foundation to create projects on your own or continue in upcoming advanced workshops. Sewing machines provided. We ask you to bring your own sharp, 3 or 4 inch scissors to class. Instructor will give details on purchasing thread and fabric for your project at the first class. Classes will be held on Thursdays for 5 classes - 10-2, 10-9, 10-23, 10-30, and 11-6-25.

Intro to Sewing
The Clinton Art Society (CAS) is pleased to present the Elected Artist Members Exhibition on view from September 22 through November 20, 2025. From Frank Pepe’s original hat to celebrity-signed pizza boxes (including Gwyneth Paltrow and Yogi Berra!), if you love the crust, the crunch and the char of New Haven apizza, or simply have strong views on what comprises a good pie, you’ll find something to feed your personal pizza passion in the new exhibit “Pronounced Ah-Beetz,” open now at the New Haven Museum (NHM) through October 2027.
“Pronounced Ah-Beetz” examines the fun, the flavor and the history of pizza, including its origin as an affordable means of feeding workers in the fields of Italy, and how it became the food of the poor in the U.S. The Italian migration to New Haven gave way to Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana, which gave birth to Sally’s Apizza, while a mile away Tony’s Apizza became Modern. How these three establishments became among the most iconically loved pizza restaurants in the country is a major focus.
While the exhibit highlights the “Big 3” original apizza spots in New Haven, it also extends through the family tree of New Haven pizzerias to present a picture of family, food and community that includes a host of other local pizzerias, including: Ernie’s, Zuppardi’s, BAR, Zeneli’s, Olde World, and the Big Green Pizza Truck, among others.

Once again Spectrum Art Gallery will have pieces that feature the colors and textures of Fall as we say goodbye to Summer and turn the gallery into an autumn adventure.

Emerging Autumn
This exhibition will be on view at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music’s Miller Hall at 406 Prospect Street, New Haven from October 9 - December 5 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12 - 4 p.m., except for Thanksgiving week, when the ISM is closed.
Lucasen Brown: Stanza presents a series of twenty intimate-scaled abstract paintings developed during Brown's time at Yale Institute of Sacred Music/Yale Divinity School (2023-2025). The exhibition also includes a selection of works on paper with corresponding poems by 2025 ISM graduate Emily Chan from a small book-length collaboration.
Each painting has an association for the artist: a life event, a place, a feeling, a person. Brown explores ways the painting process weaves memory, trauma and spiritual repair: "Wholeness, to me, is when I am just a painter in the world who allows a world of feeling into my abstract paintings—a place where everything belongs.” The paintings hold space for viewers to consider their own healing through faith, noticing, and remaining open to uncertainty.
Paint, for Brown, becomes both a surface and a subject. The artist hopes the paintings evoke corporeality, silence, interiority, and sacred everydayness. The repetition of marks on the painting surfaces is meditative and accretive.
The paintings are informed by textile, specifically Lenore Tawney's open-warp weavings; art movements including Minimalism and Pattern Painting and Decoration; and essays, namely Roland Barthes' theory of text and textile.
The exhibition traces the paintings’ transition from grid-based abstraction to a more intuitive and emotionally attuned process that pushes beyond the limitation of the grid. The artist realized his painting world, emotional and liberative, could no longer be confined to a grid.

LIFETIME/LIFELINE: A Collaboration
In Mojave poet Natalie Diaz’s words, “The Colorado River is the most endangered river in the United States—also, it is a part of my body. / I carry a river. It is who I am: ‘Aha Makav. This is not metaphor.” This symposium is provoked by Diaz’s poem, “The First Water is the Body,” and convenes scholars, activists, artists, and spiritual practitioners diversely committed to the vitality of water and waterspaces. Amidst water crisis, we seek to share cosmovisions, bodies of knowledge, modes of communication that emerge from deep attention to water. In our interlocking articulations of water cosmologies, water crisis, and water power, we aim to open new paths of insight and collaboration toward collective healing.

Using both hand-building techniques and the potter’s wheel, participants learn the foundational skills needed to create basic ceramic cups, bowls, and floral containers. As students refine these skills, they will work on more complex projects. This will enable them to combine techniques, push their creativity, and practice creative problem-solving.
Glazing, slips, and other surface treatments will be explored. There will be instructor demonstrations and individual consultations. Wear clothes that can get dirty.
Afternoon Clay
In this 3-session class, children ages 7–11 years old let their imaginations soar using papier-mâché techniques to make jewelry and small animal sculptures. All materials included. No experience is necessary.
Cathy Lovell’s lifelong interest in the creative arts continues to guide her through a gratifying career as both art educator and studio artist. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire and Wesleyan University, Cathy has taught in the Newton, MA, Greenwich, CT and East Lyme, CT public school systems. She has also taught private classes in various fields including stained glass, jewelry making and silver work, enameling, ceramics, glass bead making, and quilting.
In the interest of furthering her own education, Cathy received a scholarship to attend the Pilchuck Glass School where she worked with Dale Chihuly and Patrick Reyntiens. Her interest in felting began with a workshop led by Lynne Ocone at the Guilford Art Center. Cathy is a member of the Northeast Felt makers Guild where she has had the privilege of participating in classes given by world renowned felt makers. Cathy credits her friend and fellow felt maker Catherine Stebinger with sharing ongoing creative energy, inspiration, and encouragement. Her work is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook, Connecticut.

The Teacher Leadership Program is a free, one-hour workshop on Zoom for educators of all levels and disciplines that meets at 4:00 pm on the first Thursday of the month throughout the academic year. The sessions are led by Jessica Sack, the Jan and Frederick Mayer Curator of Public Education; Clara Poteet, the John Walsh Fellow in Museum Education; Wurtele Gallery Teachers; and Education Department staff. In this program, educators explore innovative ways to connect their curricula and interest in art with the Yale University Art Gallery’s collection. The sessions also address online and in-person teaching techniques.

Learn the versatile and popular craft of silkscreen/serigraph printmaking.
Students will transfer photo images (photography, drawing, painting, or multimedia art) to the printing screens and print onto paper, fabric, or wood panel. Image separations (digital and hand) to print images with more than one color as well as learning how to register multiple colors for printing will be discussed.
Includes one 3-hour practice session per week during monitored practice hours.

Learn basic metalsmithing for making jewelry, developing new skills, or strengthen existing ones. Weekly demonstrations introduce tools and techniques required for working with nonferrous sheet metal and wire. Demonstrations may include sawing, filing, cold-connecting, soldering, surface embellishment, forging, shaping, fold forming, finishing, and patina coloring.

EL KHAT
El Khat is a homemade junkyard band led by multi-instrumentalist Eyal El Wahab. In 2018/19, El Khat began to hone their sound in garages and warehouses. Experimenting with DIY homemade instruments, as an expression of a minimalist life philosophy, led the three-piece to create a collection of Arabic tunes of Yemeni origin. While the detachment from any nation or any flag is a driving force behind the group, the heart of their music and heritage is rooted in the culture of Yemen. The constant divisions that have been created by wars and immigrations has pushed out a reassembled identity, something that is strongly felt in El Khat's music.
Named for the plant used so widely chewed across the Arab Peninsula, The band brings original compositions inspired by the music of the golden age in Aden, Yemen. El Wahab plays many instruments, like the dli and the Kearat that he constructed himself. It's something he started doing several years ago, using his skills to make music from the items people discard. A child of the Yemeni diaspora who's grown up in Tel Aviv Jaffa - Israel, it's a practice that harks back to the family homeland, where even rubbish can have become an instrument.
El Wahab has always been a man of invention. He talked his way into the Jerusalem East-West Orchestra as a cellist, self-taught from busking and unable to read music, learning the repertoire by ear as he went along, and picking up music theory. It gave him a strong foundation, but his world changed when he was given 'Qat, Coffee & Qambus: Raw 45s from Yemen' an LP of Yemeni traditional music from the 1960s. It came as an epiphany. He quit the orchestra, began building instruments and put together El Khat.
MUTE, El Khat’s 3rd album, released in September 2024 on the German record label, Glitterbeat Records. Mute is an album that explores distance, speech – and the lack of it. It’s a series of musings on people, places – and leaving. The record began life with the core of El Khat – multi-instrumentalist el Wahab, percussionist Lotan Yaish and organist Yefet Hasan – recording in an isolated village underground shelter. “My state of mind at the time affected the compositions even before I wrote the music,” el Wahab notes, “and the isolated location gave us a chance to make sense of that.”
Following those sessions, in the summer of 2023 the group emigrated to Berlin; a far cry from Jaffa, where they’d largely grown up. The move was an expression of the nomadic urge that has been a constant in el Wahab’s life, one that flows directly into his work.
Albat Alawi Op.99, El Khat’s 2nd album, released on March 2022 via Glitterbeat Records, celebrates an homage to Faisal Alawi, a popular Yemeni singer who died in 2010, along with an alba, a small tin box that can contain many treasures, while the Op.99 is intended to give the compositions “the same respect as Western classical music.”
Saadia Jefferson, El Khat’s debut album, released in November 2019 in the UK label - Batov Records. The album brings a funky, psychedelic re-imagination to the traditional Yemeni songs that electrified him when he first heard them, this is an album almost entirely filled with his own compositions, something close and personal that constantly looks back to his family’s homeland in Yemen.

Over the course of their thirty trips around the sun, Earth has remained diligent in their commitment to monolithic minimalism. The sonic vocabulary may have changed—from their early years churning out seismic drone metal on albums like Earth 2 (1993) to the dusty Morricone-tinged comeback album Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method (2005) to the meditative rock approach of Primitive and Deadly (2014)—but the underlying principle of austerity and restraint remains a constant. With their latest album Full Upon Her Burning Lips, Earth purges the layers of auxiliary instrumentation that embellished some of their previous records and deconstructed their dynamic to the core duo of Dylan Carlson on guitar and bass and Adrienne Davies on drums and percussion. In the process, they tapped into the Platonic ideal of Earth—an incarnation of the long running band bolstered by the authority of purpose, where every note and every strike on the drum kit carries the weight of the world.
Full Upon Her Burning Lips opens with “Datura’s Crimson Veils”, a twelve-minute opus that adheres to Earth’s 21st century approach with Carlson’s sepia-toned Bakersfield Sound guitars lurching across a barren landscape while Davies punctuates the melodies with death knell drums. It’s a sound that harkens back to the riff-constructed vistas of their Angels of Darkness, Demons of Light albums, but stripped of their ornateness. “It was definitely a very organically developed record,” Carlson says of the process. “I limited the number of effects I used. I always like the limiting of materials to force oneself to employ them more creatively. Previous Earth records were quite lush sounding, and I wanted a more upfront and drier sound, using very few studio effects.” In less capable hands, these kinds of limitations might diminish the aural scope of the compositions, but Carlson and Davies have always thrived on reductive methods.
The stripped down approach had another advantage. “I really wanted the drums to be present,” Carlson says. “I felt with previous Earth records that other instrumentation took up so much of the sonic space that the drums were kind of pushed to the side.” This tactic helps highlight Davies’ ability to elevate the drum kit beyond its mere metronomic functions and allows it to serve as an expressive, nuanced, and tonally rich component to Earth’s arsenal of sound.
In addition to scaling back on their ranks, Earth altered their previous trajectory by entering into Full Upon Her Burning Lips without a conceptual arc to guide the process, relying instead on their collective subconscious to hone in on the overarching muse as the songs developed. “In the past I’ve usually had a strong framework for an album,” Carlson says. “This one developed over the course of writing and recording. It just felt like ‘Earth’—like just the two players doing their best work at playing, serving the music.” The absence of a pre-existing narrative guiding the compositions meant that the songs were more open and intuitive, often resulting in more terse musical vignettes like the richly harmonic “Exaltation of Larks” or the dreamily itinerant “Maidens Catafalque”. Yet subconscious impulses gradually created their own subtext for the album. “I wanted this to be a ‘sexy’ record, a record acknowledging the ‘witchy’ and ‘sensual’ aspects in the music… sort of a ‘witch’s garden’ kind of theme, with references to mind altering plants and animals that people have always held superstitious beliefs towards. A conjuror or root doctor’s herbarium of songs, as it were.”
The ten tracks on Full Upon Her Burning Lips came together in bits and pieces. Songs like “Cats on the Briar” and “Mandrake’s Hymn” stemmed from a handful of musical phrases and repeating patterns concocted in moments of downtime during their 2017 tour schedule. “Descending Belladonna” came from a live soundtrack project. Other songs came from rehearsals in the months leading up to recording or in moments of divine inspiration in the studio. The record was engineered, mixed, and mastered by longtime associate Mell Dettmer at Studio Soli. Knowing their process and their sound, Dettmer helped harness, shape, and document the songs in a manner that highlights the depth of Earth’s sparse components, capturing hidden dimensions much like the veiled images residing in the Magic Eye prints from the ‘90s. For the patient listener, the cyclical nature of the songs “She Rides an Air of Malevolence” or “An Unnatural Carousel” reveal new forms with repeated listens, with the subtle variations between passes creating a kaleidoscope of auditory activity.
“I feel like this is the fullest expression and purest distillation of what Earth does since I re-started the band,” Carlson says in reflection of Full Upon Her Burning Lips. And indeed, anyone that’s followed Earth on their journey will bask in the unadulterated hums, throbs, and reverberations conjured by Carlson and Davies. Erin began pursuing a career in wine in the fall of 2011 in a sales role with Perfecta Wine Co. where she spent 8 years selling a boutique wine portfolio in New Hampshire, learning the industry and achieving WSET Level 3 Advanced and Level 2 Certified Sommelier through the Court of Masters.
Momentum led her to immersive trips to California, Oregon, Washington, France, and Bulgaria that further ignited her passion for the wine and spirits industry. Her repertoire grew to working with innovative, craft gin distillers, and a wine-based portfolio with Pine State New Hampshire, where she managed a sales team, selling ultra premium wines…like Round Pond Estate!
