J. M. W. Turner's seascapes demonstrate how his engagements with water—as subject, substance, and perhaps even collaborator—explore how humans coexist with one of the most alien features of our environment. From beaches to boats, mists to waterfalls, Steve Mentz argues that Turner presents water as a challenge to human ideas of order. The intersection of Turner and the “blue humanities,” which recently developed a critical language for relationships between human culture and water in all its forms, resonates for those of us who live near—and in Mentz’s case, swim in—Long Island Sound during an age of rising sea levels.

TREVOR HALL
TrevorHall and The Great In-Between marks the start of a new era for musician TrevorHall. Releasing September 15th, 2023 on Hall’s own 3 Rivers Label, the highly-anticipated record delivers a future-folk masterpiece anchored in Hall’s beloved style, while simultaneously bringing a refreshing new sound to the forefront. Created solely within the confines of a barn-turned-studio in his own backyard, this record marks the first of Hall’s career where he helmed every aspect of the production process. Penned without external influence and from a purely creative and explorative space, TrevorHall and the Great In-Between unveils raw and unfiltered facets of Hall that remain undiscovered.
Hailing from a small island in South Carolina, Hall was raised in a musical family and began formally studying classical guitar in high school at Idyllwild Arts Academy. Quickly thrust into the world of major labels, Hall signed a record deal at the young age of sixteen. After realizing the restrictive nature of such deals, he decided to pave his own way and reclaim his artistic freedom. Starting in 2017, he began releasing music independently. Since then, Hall has sold hundreds of thousands of albums and amassed billions of streams, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless listeners. His memorable live performances have graced venues around the world, including multiple sold-out headline shows at the historic Red Rocks Amphitheater. Hall currently resides in Colorado with his wife, author & photographer Emory Hall, as well as his son.

DANIEL RODRIQUEZ
Whether it was personal heartbreak or the seismic shift in his daily life when exiting his longtime band, Elephant Revival, Daniel Rodriguez’s latest album, Harboring Pearls , is a snapshot of a singer-songwriter simply trying to navigate the choppy waters of existence to the best of his ability.
“I preserved my own sanity. I preserved my own integrity,” Rodriguez says. “There’s something about not being comfortable, knowing my integrity and ethics, knowing my path and where I’m headed — I’m fueled by not choosing to be comfortable.”
Captured by producer David Baron at his Sun Mountain, situated atop a ridge amid the ancient Catskill Mountains of Woodstock, New York, Harboring Pearls was co-produced by Wesley Schultz, lead singer for indie-folk juggernaut The Lumineers.
“Now? It’s just me and the storm,” Rodriguez says. “All the chips are in on this one piece of art. Am I crazy? Do I trust myself? What I am doing? It’s this lingering feeling that I have no idea where it’s headed, but I need to go wherever it’s headed."
That internal, more so existential quest of self, of purpose and pursuit, lies at the core of Harboring Pearls. Numbers like of “El Dorado,” “Anything and Everything” and “Graduation” paint vivid indie-folk pictures of Rodriguez’s journey unfolding in real time.
“It’s about transcendence, and that’s been such a wild process,” Rodriguez says. “There’s been this pressure cooking with the songs. A lot of coal being compressing into diamonds.”
And what resulted was this steadfast platform of trust and radiance offered by Schultz, one where Rodriguez felt comfortable standing on, the culmination of those sessions being this cultivation of truth and sacrifice the lies within each selection of Harboring Pearls.
“You’re on your own and these are your pearls,” Rodriguez says of this latest batch of tunes. “And you’ve been harboring them for so long. It’s time to pass them out.”

OS MUTANTES
Os Mutantes ("The Mutants") are an influential Brazilian psychedelic rock band that were linked with the Tropicália movement of the late 1960s. When Os Mutantes was formed, it combined influences from psychedelic acts from the English-speaking world like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and Sly & the Family Stone with bossa nova, tropicália, samba and the cultural legacy of the Brazilian art vanguards from the modernist movement.
One of the most well-known and influential rock bands in Brazil, Os Mutantes are cited as a major influence to many contemporary underground or independent bands in the United States and Europe. Beck paid tribute to the group with his single "Tropicália" from the album Mutations. The Bees (UK band) covered "A Minha Menina" on their first album, Sunshine Hit Me. Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player Flea has stated on his Twitter account that he is a fan. Kevin Barnes of Of Montreal cites Os Mutantes as an important influence. Talking Heads frontman David Byrne has worked to publish and promote the group's music through his Luaka Bop label. Kurt Cobain publicly requested a reunion tour from the trio in 1993, writing a letter to Arnaldo Baptista, but the bands first live performance since 1978 was at London’s Barbican Arts Centre on May 22, 2006 - (though without Rita Lee, who was replaced with Zélia Duncan on vocals). This performance was followed by shows in New York City, Los Angeles (with the Flaming Lips), San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Chicago, and Miami. However in September 2007, both Arnaldo Baptista and Zélia Duncan left the band, each expressing wishes to continue with their respective solo projects.
Sérgio Dias, however, vowed to keep the reformed band alive, not wanting to let "the giant sleep again", as he put it. And so, led by Dias with Esmeria Bulgari on vocals, Henrique Peters on keyboards, Vinicius Junqueira on bass and Claudio Tchernev on drums the band toured extensively enjoying some great highlights such as "A Minha Menina" featuring as the audio track for the McDonald's commercial “Victory” in June 2008, their first new release in 35 years, “Haih Or Amortecedor” (ANTI- Records) in September 2009. Extensive tours in support of the album including Glastonbury Festival in June 2010. In 2011, they collaborated with Of Montreal on the song "Bat Macumba" for the Red Hot Organization's most recent charitable album "Red Hot+Rio 2." and in 2013 the release of their album “Fool Metal Jack”. In 2017, Sergio Dias collaborated with the English singer-songwriter, Carly Bryant and subsequently she was put into the band’s line up on vocals, guitars and keyboards. Tres Olhos Music Festival quoted after her debut performance “"Packed with the new vocals, Carly Bryant took the audience to ecstasy, showing she’s here to stay.” The six piece release the single ‘Black and Grey’ in late 2017 and are currently working on a new studio album.

Sarah Schneiderman from Glastonbury, Connecticut, is the featured artist at the Cheshire Public Library at 104 Main Street in Cheshire, CT, from July 2 through July 30, 2025. Her exhibit, “More Garbage Than Fish,” showcases assemblages made from trash that depict the fish she encountered while scuba diving. The artist is hosting a reception on Monday, July 7, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The show and reception are free and open to the public.
Ms. Schneiderman explains what influenced this series: “I started diving in 2013 after retiring from my corporate career. I fell in love with the creatures found in the ocean and learned that coral reefs are dying and water temperatures are rising. Having previously created art using found objects and trash, I continued this theme by making representational artwork of the fish I’ve seen while diving. These pieces reveal both the beauty and the sometimes haunting aspects of sea life. Beneath the surface beauty, I address the overwhelming presence of trash, particularly in our oceans, through the use of found and recycled materials. This includes everyday debris, and items people have given me such as bead and button collections, produce bags, and piano parts.”
The exhibit also offers information on how to reduce our plastic consumption.

Separated by 2,781 miles and on two different continents, Iraqi and Nigerian Christians share similar stories of persecution. From 2014-2018, portions of Northern Iraq were under the control of the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and many religious minorities, including Christians, experienced persecution and violence as a result. In the northern and central portions of Nigeria, violence towards Christians and other minority groups has also increased in recent years at the hands of Boko Haram and other groups.
The Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center is honored to share the stories of those displaced in Iraq and Nigeria through Among the Persecuted and Displaced — a collection of photographs taken by Stephen Rasche. The Knights of Columbus has sponsored some of Rasche’s work in both countries, bringing to light the atrocities inflicted on those persecuted for their faith.

Have you ever researched your family history but didn’t know how to preserve all you found? Are you curious about how your family history connects to the larger history of the United States, but unsure how to begin your exploration? Join the New Haven Museum for a lunchtime webinar, “Baobab: Learning and Teaching by Making Family History Books,” on July 16, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. Former NHM intern and 2025 Yale University graduate KaLa Keaton will offer a look at the research and creative process needed to make a “family history book.” Register here.
In 2024, the Afro American Cultural Center and Generational African American Students Association held a genealogy series on the Yale campus. The events renewed Keaton’s interest in genealogy and led her to create “Baobab” as her Education Studies Scholars Intensive Certificate senior research capstone project.
Keaton notes that a family history book is a great way to preserve the memory of the elders in one’s family and keep their stories for future generations. Her webinar will offer a starting place to begin a family history book journey. “In a time when educational institutions are under increasing scrutiny, public schools and museums alike, we can find solace in being able to research our direct ancestors to learn about historical subjects that are important to us,” Keaton says.
“Baobab: Tree of Our Lives,” is Keaton’s own family history book tracing her maternal and paternal family histories. Inspired by her own curiosity around her family’s history and how to preserve their stories, “Baobab” is a loving combination of genealogy, archiving, oral history, scholarship, art, and creative design that preserves Keaton’s research findings into the form of a book/magazine. “I realized the wealth of knowledge my family members have cannot be taken for granted,” Keaton says. “ I wanted to act on this project while my elders were still able to tell their stories and share information that I did not know. “
Keaton is a 2025 graduate of Yale University with a degree in African American studies and intensive certificate in education studies. A North Carolina native, she found her passion for history, preservation, and educational equity during a high school partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative investigating the only recorded lynching in her home county. While a student at Yale, she learned from New Haven educators by participating in teacher partnerships, working in High School in the Community, and interning for the New Haven Museum. Before returning to school to pursue her doctorate, she will work in the college access and admissions field.

About the Bands
Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez
Christine Ohlman is a singer, songwriter, and musician with a deep love for rock & roll. Her career spans decades, from early bands like The Scratch Band to her current work with Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez. She’s a long-time vocalist for Saturday Night Live’s band and has collaborated with legendary artists like Elvis Costello, Dion, and Bonnie Raitt. Known for her powerful vocals and signature beehive hairstyle, she’s not just a performer but also a passionate advocate for keeping the soul alive in rock & roll, evident in her songwriting and her dedication to music history through writing and musicology work.
Dave Matthews Tribute Band
DMTB is a celebration of the music of the Dave Matthews Band. DMTB is a time machine to a funky tea party in the 90’s, a boisterous time of tape trading, sing-alongs, and exploration into a new sonic landscape spearheaded by complex guitar riffs, soaring violin melodies, smooth sax lines, and explorative-explosive drumming. Dedicated to recreating that moment in musical history, the DMTB has been honing their craft for over 20 years. The DMTB aims to transport the listener back in time. The band takes inspiration from the classic DMB sound, with immense respect for the original quintet. While including material from the bands later and current catalogs, the goal is to create a well rounded and authentic tribute.
Orleans
Platinum hit-maker ORLEANS is now celebrating 50+ YEARS of live performances! Praised and respected by their peers for their songwriting skills, instrumental prowess and classic trademark harmonies, their iconic radio hits, including “Still The One”, “Dance With Me” and “Love Takes Time,” still resonate with audiences of all ages thanks to continued airplay on Classic Rock radio, television, film and streaming services. Orleans has produced a body of work spanning 17 albums and several DVDs … and they continue to be in demand for live shows, as they have been now for 5 decades. Since its humble beginnings in Woodstock NY and throughout countless worldwide tours, the band has set some very high standards. Here in 2023 and beyond, Orleans continues to meet and exceed those standards at every show, to the delight of audiences everywhere.
Shaboo AllStars
Shaboo Allstars were formed by R&B vocalist David “Lefty” Foster and Matt “Guitar” Murphy in 1979. They have played all 50 states and toured extensively in Europe. The band’s line-up changes regularly and always features top musicians from the world’s best R&B bands. This summer’s Grassy Strip show will showcase the talents of David “Lefty” Foster, Wolf Ginandes (All Star original), Cliff Goodwin (Joe Cocker Band), Mitch Chakour (Joe Cocker Band), Marty Richards (J. Geils Band), Curt Ramm (E. Street Band), Baron Raymond (Rod Stewart Band).
Quinn Sullivan Band
A rare artist who’s always sounded older than his years, Sullivan has been touring the world since he was 11-years-old, playing storied venues such as Madison Square Garden, the Hollywood Bowl and RFK Stadium in Washington D.C., as well as India’s Mahindra Blues Festival, Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, and three Montreux Jazz Festivals. Quinn has shared the stage with his hero and mentor Buddy Guy, as well as Carlos Santana on several occasions. Quinn’s performance experience includes appearances on leading national television programs such as The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Conan, and The Oprah Winfrey Show, to name a few. “I want to stay true to where I come from, and go from there,” says Sullivan. “The artists that inspire me to do that are always hungry for the new. They never repeat themselves. They just grow and become more unique — and that’s what I aim to do as an artist.”
Jeff Pitchell and Texas Flood
Blues Hall of Fame award winning guitarist Jeff Pitchell’s style blends B.B. King and Duane Allman, which was endorsed by Gregg Allman. His diverse songwriting catalog recalls the variety of Eric Clapton’s classics and his vocal delivery, which ranges from smooth tenderness to Billy Gibbons ZZ Top-like power, received high praise from J. Geils. His songwriting award winning “An Eye for an Eye” was recorded by British blues legend John Mayall. Over the years Jeff Pitchell has shared the stage with J. Geils, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Jaimoe, B.B. King, and so many more.
Lee Ann Lovelace Band
Lee-Ann Lovelace is a singer/songwriter from Waterbury, CT who has performed on hundreds of stages throughout Nee England and beyond since 2004. She’ll charm you with hints of Jazz, dig into Folk and Americana stylings, and then leave you floored with powerful Soul, Rock, Pop and Blues vocals all in one performance. Lee-Ann has collaborated with the late, legendary producer Paul Leka and has opened for Orleans, Bruce Hornsby (with Back to The Garden 1969), Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famer Ronnie Spector, and most notably Christine Ohlman “The Beehive Queen,” – singing back-ups at the Rhythm and Roots Fest. Some notable performances have been at The Towne Crier in Beacon, NY, Daryl’s House in Pawling, NY, The Knickerbocker in RI, The Bijou Theater in Bridgeport, CT, Levitt Pavilion in Westport, CT, the Bushnell Park Stage in Hartford, CT.
Gold Dust Woman
Gold dust woman is the ultimate Stevie Nicks show, celebrating the legendary and beloved career of Stevie Nicks. Gold dust woman takes audiences into the 4 plus decades of the timeless solo career of rock & roll’s mystic poet and two-time rock & roll hall of fame inductee, along with the classic songs of Fleetwood mac. Supported by an amazing group of seasoned musicians. When Janet Soluri steps onto the stage, she transforms the true, magical essence of the gypsy queen that is Stevie. Her likeness both visually and vocally, are captivating and has been hailed as the “closest possible thing to Stevie herself”. Gold dust woman provides an electrifying and dynamic show like no other, which has audiences, dancing, singing and cheering for more.
Jake Kulak and the Modern Vandals
Award-winning musician Jake Kulak has been performing professionally in front of audiences since the age of 12. Thrilling audiences from Norway to Boston, from Sydney Australia to NYC, and down to the Mississippi Delta, Jake plays guitar-driven blues/rock music which highlights his improvisational ability. His set list includes original blues and contemporary rock music as well as unique covers of blues and funk artists. Jake spent five summers playing the Blues in the home of the Blues – Clarksdale, Mississippi. He has also been CT’s entry in the International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase in Memphis, TN for four years.

Based in Athens, Georgia, Wim Tapley came of age playing venues in Washington D.C. and its sprawling suburbs. There, he honed his voice with the passion of a born troubadour, drawing in a diverse fanbase with his easy showmanship and distinct style.
Since 2021, Athens has been home to Wim and his live band The Cannons. His first week in the Empire State of the South, Wim made his way onto a local bill, etching a name for himself as a fresh and favorite hometown voice. He is ardently received by his ever-growing following at legendary regional venues like the Georgia Theatre, Eddie’s Attic, and the 40 Watt Club— the latter of which he’s headlined more than once— and on tours across the Southeast, playing ticketed shows in capital cities and SEC university campuses.
Firmly rooted in Americana and dashed with glamorous pop sensibilities, the swinging depths of neo-soul, and a sprinkling of riotous horns, Wim’s arresting sound is as fresh as it is ageless, as fevered as it is raucous fun.
Ever-inspired by the alchemy that happens on stage, in the studio Wim’s instruments stay live and edges remain raw. A sonic westward expansion of fuzzed-out guitars, saloon pianos, defiant horns, and dusty vocals, his discography blazes a fresh new take on folk-pop while honoring the songwriting giants that paved the way before him like Jason Isbell, Bill Withers, and Chris Stapleton.
More than a frontman, Wim is an experienced multi-instrumentalist and producer. On his most recent release The Woodlands he played, recorded, and co-produced every element himself. While capable and compelling as a one-man-band, Wim’s genuine warmth and natural gift for building community compels creative partnerships wherever his feet land. In Athens, he’s migrated his production chops from his bedroom to his label Cannon Records where he produces multiple hometown talents in collaboration with the greatest sound engineers and session artists in Athens.
Follow Wim on Spotify and Instagram and never miss out on the musical misadventures of the East Coast’s resident space cowboy.

WILLIAM ELLIOTT WHITMORE
A man armed only with a banjo and a bass drum can be a formidable force, especially if his name is William Elliott Whitmore. With his powerful voice and honest approach, Whitmore comes from the land, growing up on a family farm in Lee County, Iowa. Still living on the same farm today, Whitmore has truly taken the time to discover where his center lies, and from that he will not be moved.
Whitmore has repeatedly carved his own path, honoring the longstanding tradition of folk music throughout his nearly 20 year career, while always allowing his blues, soul and punk rock influences to shine through. Getting his first break opening for his friend’s hardcore band with just a banjo in hand, he would discover bands like The Jesus Lizard, Bad Brains, Lungfish and Minutemen and soon learn to play his own brand of rural, roots music with that same DIY ethic.
William Elliott Whitmore has been back and forth across the United States and to cities around the world. He’s toured with such diverse acts as Frank Turner, Trampled By Turtles, Clutch and Chris Cornell to name a few. He’s appeared on some of the biggest stages around the world including Stagecoach Fest, Byron Bluesfest (Australia) and End of the Road Fest (UK). His willingness to take his show to any playing field has proved invaluable as he turned strangers to diehards with every performance.

Summer Juried Exhibition

"Red, White, and Bruised: America's Healthcare and Reproductive Rights" — Assemblages from Medical Debris by Sarah Schneidermanon view in the Workshop Gallery at Ball & Socket Arts from June 27 to July 27, 2025.
Opening reception on June 27 from 3-6 pm with the opportunity to meet the artist.
Artist Talk and Q&A on Saturday, June 28th at 11 am.
Gallery hours are Friday to Sunday from 12-4 pm with free admission.
In "Red, White, and Bruised," artist Sarah Schneiderman confronts the fractured healthcare and reproductive landscape in the United States. Schneiderman made these poignant assemblages from non-recyclable medical and other debris. This exhibit juxtaposes imagery of American flags with maps showing state-level abortion access. Each piece in this exhibit examines the promises of liberty and justice against the realities of unequal care, legislative control, and choice.
Sarah reimagines the flag—an emblem of national pride and unity—using discarded medical materials such as pill packs, gauze, surgical socks, and syringe tubes. These flags represent waste in America's healthcare system, both figuratively and literally. They explore the equality of those who have access to healthcare. Minorities, women, and people of lower socioeconomic status receive different care than wealthy white men. Alongside the flags, abortion access maps, constructed from similar debris, show in which states reproductive rights are banned or are safe and legal. These maps lay bare the consequences of political decisions on real bodies.
Together, these works ask: "What does it mean to pledge allegiance to a nation where geography, wealth, gender, and race determine who has access to care?"
"Red, White, and Bruised" invites viewers to reflect on national pride, laws, and personal health. It challenges us to envision a country where care and choice are universal rights, not privileges.

Madison Lyric Stage, a professional theater company on the Connecticut shoreline, presents Peter Shaffer’s suspenseful, music-filled drama Amadeus July 18 – August 3. The history, legacy and rivalry of classical music giants, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, explode in a story filled with jealousy, revenge, malice and scandal.
Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus is a reimagining of the lives of 18th century musical rivals Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The play, brought to life with the music of Mozart, is a tale of jealousy and betrayal…and perhaps even murder. The story opens in 1825 on the eve of the elderly Salieri’s death. A rumor has begun to circulate in Vienna that 34 years earlier Salieri had poisoned his rival Mozart. No one knows whether to believe it, or why Salieri might have wanted to murder Mozart.
Full of pomp and pageantry, Amadeus is a brilliantly funny and sometimes tragic examination of a man at war with his God. Salieri, in the long shadow of Mozart’s undeniable genius, cannot forgive his Creator for endowing him with comparative mediocrity. Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Play, Amadeus ran for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway, and was made into a major motion picture, winning eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
“This play wrestles with huge ideas, huge emotions, and is set to the astonishing music of Mozart,” says Marc Deaton, artistic director of Madison Lyric Stage. “Salieri does everything right to earn the love of his God, but God bestows the far greater musical gifts on Mozart, who is infantile, profane and indifferent to God’s very existence. In fact, Amadeus, Mozart’s middle name, in Latin literally means “loved by God.”
The production is directed by Marc Deaton, and features John Johmann as Salieri, Nathaniel Baker as Mozart, Allison Waggener as Constanze, and Daniel Dykes as Joseph II.
Tickets are $55 and are available at madisonlyricstage.org. Performance times are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00 pm, and Sundays at 4:00 pm at the historic Deacon John Grave House, located at 581 Boston Post Road in Madison.
