In this hands-on quilting workshop, participants will explore the bold, playful, and unconventional world of modern quilt blocks. You’ll learn how to break away from traditional symmetry and embrace negative space, color contrast, and improvisation to create eye-catching designs. This two-part class includes a follow-up Guided Making session where participants can continue their block projects or bring in another quilt to work on alongside the instructor and fellow makers.
This is a two-part class: November 2nd (instruction) and November 16th (guided making).
What to Expect
In the first session, students will dive into key principles of modern quilt design and practice constructing blocks using techniques like asymmetry, minimalism, and bold color placement. You’ll work hands-on with a sewing machine and learn how to design blocks that pop, using both guided patterns and improvisational methods.
The second session (November 16th) is a Guided Making day—participants can return to build on what they started in the first class or bring in a different quilting project to continue with support from the instructor and their fellow participants.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own fabric for the style and color palette they want to work in. A small selection of fabric will be available for practice and experimentation if needed.
Skills You’ll Acquire
• Design principles for modern quilting (negative space, asymmetry, bold color use)
• Techniques for piecing modern quilt blocks
• How to work with improvisational layouts
• Hands-on sewing machine use for creative piecing
• Pattern adaptation and block customization
What’s Provided
• Sewing machines and necessary tools
• Rotary cutters, rulers, and cutting mats
• Limited fabric scraps for practice
• Guidance and support across both sessions
Participants are highly encouraged to bring their own fabric to reflect their personal style and to get the most out of the creative process.
Who Should Attend
This class is great for beginner to intermediate quilters who are looking to experiment with design and color or step outside traditional quilting methods. Whether you’re a returning student or just curious about quilting with a modern twist, this class offers a creative, low-pressure space to explore.
Prerequisites/Safety Information
No specific prerequisites. Basic familiarity with a sewing machine is helpful. Participants should bring fabric of their choice for their main project. Tools and safety instructions will be provided. Scrap materials will be available for testing and practice.
This is a two-part class: November 2nd (instruction) and November 16th (guided making).

Music Director Perry So says, “In this concert I am thrilled to welcome our new composer-in-residence, Courtney Bryan, to New Haven. Over the next two seasons we will explore Courtney’s music, and get to know her multifaceted musical world that encompasses everything from concert music and jazz, to spirituals, improvisations and collaborations with visual artists. Author Talk and Book Signing with Lara Ehrlich and Kristina Ten on Sunday, November 2nd from 3-5 pm at the ReReads Booksellers
Come meet two fiction authors to celebrate their new books being published this fall. Hear them read excerpts and stay after for a book signing.
On November 2nd from 3-5 pm, in partnership with ReReads, we will host an Author Talk and Book Signing featuring Lara Ehrlich and Kristina Ten in conversation about their recent works of fiction: Bind Me Tighter Still and Tell Me Yours, I’ll Tell You Mine.
Bind Me Tighter Still by Lara Ehrlich
The youngest of three siren sisters, Ceto is weary of an existence driven by hunger, no better than a fish. She trades her tail for life on land, marries the first man she meets, and bears a daughter, only to discover that domesticity is just as mundane as sirenhood. In search of something more, she flees with her daughter Naia to the ocean, where she establishes a mermaid burlesque and recreates herself, performing as a siren in a tank built into the limestone cliffs overlooking the sea. She trains more sirens, expanding Sirenland from a roadside attraction to a national sensation she rules without opposition—until Naia, at 15, begins to push back against the world Ceto has created and the role she performs in her mother’s shows. A death at Sirenland threatens Ceto’s authority and leads Naia to question whether this women-ruled kingdom is truly as empowering as her mother would have her believe. Bind Me Tighter Still explores power and hunger, sacrifice and motherhood, and celebrates the fierceness of female strength in a male-dominated world.
Lara Ehrlich is an award-winning CT author, founder of Thought Fox Writers Den, a community-based writers space for all levels, and hosts the podcast Writer, Mother, Monster. She has taught and participated in panels at Bread Loaf Writers Workshop, Yale Writers Workshop, AWP, and the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing. She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor of English and Writer in Residence at Connecticut College.
Tell Me Yours, I’ll Tell You Mine by Kristina Ten
The new kid in school discovers a diabolical presence in the depths of an English-language-learning CD-ROM. A declining empire, in its last desperate gasp, designs an elaborate matchmaking system around cootie catchers and soda-can tabs. A former varsity volleyball player reopens the grisly wounds of her youth, haunted by a lost friend. In each story, the game has been twisted. In each game, players must make their own rules. Through a bloody, shattered lens, the artifacts of growing up take on a new and disquieting power—riddles remain unsolved, pranks have perilous stakes, and superstitions won’t save you.
Populated by living paper dolls, summer camp legends, and trivia nights gone terribly wrong, the twelve genre-crossing tales in Tell Me Yours, I’ll Tell You Mine wrestle with themes of memory, disobedience, alienation, belonging, and the horrors of inhabiting a body others seek to control.
NY author Kristin Ten’s short fiction has appeared in such publications as McSweeney's, Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy, We're Here: The Best Queer Speculative Fiction, and Lightspeed. She is a graduate of Clarion West Writers Workshop and the MFA program in fiction at the University of Colorado Boulder. Her work has received McSweeney's Stephen Dixon Award, the Subjective Chaos Kind of Award for Short Fiction, and the F(r)iction Writing Contest, and has been a finalist for the Shirley Jackson Award, the Locus Award, and the WSFA Small Press Award.

Biohazard has a new single, "Forsaken" officially out today! 💥
🎥 Watch the official music video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uj7ojsGYIc
Stream/buy here: ffm.to/biohazardforsaken
Biohazard was one of the first bands to regularly incorporate elements of both hip-hop and hardcore metal into their sound; since their lyrical fare dealt with the harshness of urban life and the resulting anger and frustration, which both genres of music have been known to address. When Biohazard formed in 1988 in Brooklyn, NY, their original lineup consisted of guitarist/vocalist Billy Graziadei, bassist/vocalist Evan Seinfeld, guitarist Bobby Hambel, and drummer Anthony Mio. Shortly after, Danny Schuler became the drummer. They began opening for local hardcore and thrash bands and gradually built a large following through their outraged sense of injustice, political awareness, and constant touring. A self-titled debut was released in 1990 on the Maze label, but by 1992, Biohazard's fan base was strong enough to secure a deal with Roadrunner Records.
Their subsequent breakthrough album, Urban Discipline, laying rhythmically shouted vocals over heavy, hip-hop-influenced beats and guitar riffs recalling both hardcore and thrash. The hardcore rap group Onyx recorded an alternate version of their hit single "Slam" with Biohazard backing them, and the two groups worked together again on the Judgment Night soundtrack, contributing the title song. 1994's State of the World Address solidified both their reputation for intensity and their musical hybrid, but Hambel then left the band, reducing them to a trio for 1996's Mata Leao, which some found the group's most seamless rap/metal fusion yet. Hambel was eventually replaced by ex-Helmet guitarist Rob Echevarria, and in 1997, Biohazard released the live album No Holds Barred, which showcased the in-concert ferocity for which the group had become revered.
Biohazard next signed to Mercury Records and released New World Disorder in 1999. The guys left the label following its merger with Universal and harkened back to their D.I.Y. days with a tour of Europe and Japan without label or managerial support. The rarities collection Tales from the B-Side followed in 2001, along with their next full-length, Uncivilization. Guitarist Leo Curley exited the group following the album's release. Kill or Be Killed appeared two years later and featured new axeman Carmine Vincent (ex-Nucleus), who had previously roadied for the band. Means to an End, Biohazard's eighth and final album, was issued in August 2005 on SPV. Graziadei went on to form Suicide City with ex-members of Groovenics and Kittie. Meanwhile, Seinfeld appeared on the 2006 VH1 reality show Supergroup with Ted Nugent, Sebastian Bach, Scott Ian, and Jason Bonham. In December of 2007, a live double-disc CD and accompanying DVD titled Live in San Francisco was released, documenting one of their last shows together as a band.
In 2023, Biohazard formed a reunion with all original 4 members: guitarist/vocalist Billy Graziadei, bassist/vocalist Evan Seinfeld, guitarist Bobby Hambel, and drummer Danny Schuler.

Mythology evokes images of gods, titans, demons, and beasts of every kind. Yet, it’s the spark of humanity that keeps us telling and retelling myths. It’s these stories of seduction, inheritance, and hubris that Nashville-based folk duo Haunted Like Human rekindle in the 14 songs on their third album American Mythology. Since the release of 2021’s Tall Tales & Fables, Dale Chapman and Cody Clark have been refining their sound rather than departing from it. With a background in poetry and prose, Dale Chapman's granular focus on language is simpatico with Cody Clark’s background in classical guitar, where each note carries its own weight. The result is a shapely set of songs that borrow from universal lore in order to reveal intimate truths. The pair prove they write songs like novelists write their books, using careful detail and well-shaped characters to tell even the heaviest of stories. Whatever the topic, the songs shine with restrained arrangements and entwined harmonies. This duo tells stories so well that there’s no need to cloak them with heavy-handed production or vocal processing. Instead, Haunted Like Human lets the humanity shine through.
Haunted Like Human
Born and raised in Canarsie, Brooklyn, Evan Seinfeld first gained international fame as the face of legendary hardcore band Biohazard, one of the earliest groups to fuse heavy metal, New York hardcore and punk rock with elements of hip hop. Over his career, Evan’s shared the stage with countless music luminaries including Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, David Bowie, Pantera, Slayer, Kiss, Radiohead, Iron Maiden, Cypress Hill, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Religion and Public Enemy. With Evan as lead vocalist, bassist and frontman, Biohazard sold over five million albums while performing more than 4,000 live shows in over 100 countries.

Intermediate and Advanced Pottery
This exhibition will be on view at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music’s Miller Hall at 406 Prospect Street, New Haven from October 9 - December 5 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12 - 4 p.m., except for Thanksgiving week, when the ISM is closed.
Lucasen Brown: Stanza presents a series of twenty intimate-scaled abstract paintings developed during Brown's time at Yale Institute of Sacred Music/Yale Divinity School (2023-2025). The exhibition also includes a selection of works on paper with corresponding poems by 2025 ISM graduate Emily Chan from a small book-length collaboration.
Each painting has an association for the artist: a life event, a place, a feeling, a person. Brown explores ways the painting process weaves memory, trauma and spiritual repair: "Wholeness, to me, is when I am just a painter in the world who allows a world of feeling into my abstract paintings—a place where everything belongs.” The paintings hold space for viewers to consider their own healing through faith, noticing, and remaining open to uncertainty.
Paint, for Brown, becomes both a surface and a subject. The artist hopes the paintings evoke corporeality, silence, interiority, and sacred everydayness. The repetition of marks on the painting surfaces is meditative and accretive.
The paintings are informed by textile, specifically Lenore Tawney's open-warp weavings; art movements including Minimalism and Pattern Painting and Decoration; and essays, namely Roland Barthes' theory of text and textile.
The exhibition traces the paintings’ transition from grid-based abstraction to a more intuitive and emotionally attuned process that pushes beyond the limitation of the grid. The artist realized his painting world, emotional and liberative, could no longer be confined to a grid.
Free and open to the public.

From Frank Pepe’s original hat to celebrity-signed pizza boxes (including Gwyneth Paltrow and Yogi Berra!), if you love the crust, the crunch and the char of New Haven apizza, or simply have strong views on what comprises a good pie, you’ll find something to feed your personal pizza passion in the new exhibit “Pronounced Ah-Beetz,” open now at the New Haven Museum (NHM) through October 2027.
“Pronounced Ah-Beetz” examines the fun, the flavor and the history of pizza, including its origin as an affordable means of feeding workers in the fields of Italy, and how it became the food of the poor in the U.S. The Italian migration to New Haven gave way to Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana, which gave birth to Sally’s Apizza, while a mile away Tony’s Apizza became Modern. How these three establishments became among the most iconically loved pizza restaurants in the country is a major focus.
While the exhibit highlights the “Big 3” original apizza spots in New Haven, it also extends through the family tree of New Haven pizzerias to present a picture of family, food and community that includes a host of other local pizzerias, including: Ernie’s, Zuppardi’s, BAR, Zeneli’s, Olde World, and the Big Green Pizza Truck, among others.

Intro to Stained Glass: Create a Hanging Panel
The Yale Jazz Ensembles Big Band, Wayne Escoffery, Music Director, will celebrate the centennial of the birth of American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer Miles Davis during the 2025-26 academic year. Tonight’s concert will feature world premieres of big band arrangements for the Yale Jazz Ensembles Big Band by Michael Mossman , including Boplicity, Budo, and Deception, from Davis’ pioneering album “Birth of the Cool.”
“Birth of the Cool” is a compilation album of eleven tracks recorded by Davis’ nonet for the label over the course of three sessions during 1949 and 1950. Featuring unusual instrumentation and several notable musicians, the music consists of innovative arrangements influenced by Afro-American music and classical music techniques and marked a major development in post-bebop jazz. As the title suggests, these recordings are considered seminal in the history of “cool jazz.”

POST ANIMAL
When Post Animal stepped into the studio for their new album, it was the first time all six original members were in the studio together for nearly a decade. Three band members had recently relocated away from Chicago, not to mention Joe Keery having left the band in 2017 to focus on acting. In the end they started right back up at the beginning, rediscovering that uncompromising closeness of connection they all shared from those endless hours spent in practice spaces and the late-night diner runs that follow. Prolonged stretches of time together not only reinforced the strength of their friendship—it reinvigorated their music. “If you want to get one hour of good painting in, you have to have four hours of uninterrupted time,” David Lynch once said. The product of a few straight weeks together, IRON (due July 25th) not only finds them reunited with Keery but is the embodiment of 30 days of camaraderie and unbound musical exploration, their renewed connection ironclad.
After 2022’s sublime Love Gibberish, their first independent record, Post Animal found themselves sunk deeper into their work than ever before. They toured extensively, both on their own and with UK psych band Temples. By the time things settled down, guitarist Javi Reyes and drummer Wesley Toledo were back home in Chicago, while guitarist Matt Williams moved to Los Angeles, bassist Dalton Allison decamped for Ithaca, and multi-instrumentalist Jake Hirshland relocated to Brooklyn. “There was some burnout happening,” Allison says.
But then Keery showed up at a New York tour stop , and the idea was hatched that they cut another record—all six band members together again, for the first time since 2017’s When I Think of You in a Castle. “That was near the start of Stranger Things , and now with it kind of coming to an end in my own life, we all felt it'd be great to do something like that again,” Keery says. “It was a labor of love.” The group focused on the experience and ignored any pressure. “We all agreed that even if we went and just hung out, we’d be happy with it,” Toledo says. “There was a real positivity and optimism among us.” They would set up camp at the Indiana home of their friends, tucked into some woodlands.
The creativity driven by comfort is apparent from the opening instrumental track; “Malcolm’s Cooking” was recorded in part on a balcony overlooking the foliage, complete with the humid wind, insect whirring, and euphorically clinking bottles. Lead single “Last Goodbye” follows, a slow-loping look at the end of a relationship, a point in time somehow both uneasy and familiar. There’s a vintage AM radio glow to follow-up “Pie in the Sky”, a giddy-up bass and thumping percussion giving way to layered harmony. “Make me wanna sell my soul for just a bit of your shine/ How am I gonna fill this hole, if your heart ain’t mine?” they sigh in a fit of honest, unadorned adoration.
“This record felt like a revitalization of our friendships and our band,” Hirshland says. “We always work collaboratively, but it’s amazing how reintroducing Joe into the mix brought back that dynamic from 2017.” Keery agrees, noting both how close they’ve remained despite so much change. "I was just appreciative to be spending this time, knowing we might not get another chance,” he says. “The record reflects that enjoyment, and you can feel the fun."
Each of the six musicians brought in song ideas and took their turn taking the lead. In perhaps the most intimate example, “Maybe You Have To” opens with a voicemail of Toledo’s abuela prior to her passing, with the glistening track that follows staring down the pain of that loss. But even when IRON touches on heavy themes, Post Animal finds fluidity and strength in their compositions—a clear result of sharing so much time together. “It’s a return to ourselves, but down the road, feeling better than we ever have,” Reyes says.
The album uses that honed edge to push and pull at genre threads, from synthpop to folk, vintage radio rock to twitchy psychedelia. Whether in the tumbling, interlocking eighth notes of “Common Denominator” or the cloudlike, piano-driven title track, IRON lives deliciously in its moment. Or, as Hirshland explains it: “This is an exploration of being alive and in this group of friends.”
IRON puts the listener directly into the room with the band, freewheeling and experimental yet played with precision. That atmosphere should be palpable as the band hits the road with Keery’s Djo project, Toledo and Reyes pulling double duty as well by working in his backing band—the whole group getting to spend even more time together. “All of these creative forces coming together, it was like iron sharpening iron,” Allison says. “When we’re in proximity with one another, we make each other better.”

Emerging Autumn
Exhibition curated by Lucasen Brown.
All are welcome to join us for an opening reception for this art exhibit on Wednesday, October 8 at 5 p.m.

LIFETIME/LIFELINE: A Collaboration
In Mojave poet Natalie Diaz’s words, “The Colorado River is the most endangered river in the United States—also, it is a part of my body. / I carry a river. It is who I am: ‘Aha Makav. This is not metaphor.” This symposium is provoked by Diaz’s poem, “The First Water is the Body,” and convenes scholars, activists, artists, and spiritual practitioners diversely committed to the vitality of water and waterspaces. Amidst water crisis, we seek to share cosmovisions, bodies of knowledge, modes of communication that emerge from deep attention to water. In our interlocking articulations of water cosmologies, water crisis, and water power, we aim to open new paths of insight and collaboration toward collective healing.

Using both hand-building techniques and the potter’s wheel, participants learn the foundational skills needed to create basic ceramic cups, bowls, and floral containers. As students refine these skills, they will work on more complex projects. This will enable them to combine techniques, push their creativity, and practice creative problem-solving.
Glazing, slips, and other surface treatments will be explored. There will be instructor demonstrations and individual consultations. Wear clothes that can get dirty.

Cathy Lovell’s lifelong interest in the creative arts continues to guide her through a gratifying career as both art educator and studio artist. A graduate of the University of New Hampshire and Wesleyan University, Cathy has taught in the Newton, MA, Greenwich, CT and East Lyme, CT public school systems. She has also taught private classes in various fields including stained glass, jewelry making and silver work, enameling, ceramics, glass bead making, and quilting.
In the interest of furthering her own education, Cathy received a scholarship to attend the Pilchuck Glass School where she worked with Dale Chihuly and Patrick Reyntiens. Her interest in felting began with a workshop led by Lynne Ocone at the Guilford Art Center. Cathy is a member of the Northeast Felt makers Guild where she has had the privilege of participating in classes given by world renowned felt makers. Cathy credits her friend and fellow felt maker Catherine Stebinger with sharing ongoing creative energy, inspiration, and encouragement. Her work is currently exhibited at Spectrum Gallery in Centerbrook, Connecticut.
