🐾🎃 Get ready for a spook-tacular night at the Elm City Dog Project’s Annual Howl-o-ween Doggy Costume Contest! Join us on Sunday, October 26th from 5–7 PM at Stella Blues, where pups of all shapes and sizes will strut their stuff in their creepiest, cutest, and most creative costumes.
Our panel of judges will crown the best-dressed pup, with the winner taking home one of the Friendly Neighborhood Dog Walker’s legendary prize baskets — packed with fang-tastic treats and howl-worthy toys that’ll make your pup’s night a real scream. 🐶👻
👉 Ground Rules:
- All dogs must be on leash (no retractables, no exceptions).
- No off-leash dogs.
- Aggressive or reactive dogs will kindly be asked to leave — let’s keep the scares to the costumes, not the pups. 🕷️
These events are all about celebrating the bond between dogs and their people — giving dog parents a chance to make lasting memories with their pups, while also helping dogs still waiting in shelters find the loving families they deserve.
This event is frightfully fun but also meaningful: proceeds help support local rescues, shelters, and the mission of the Elm City Dog Project — giving dogs in need a second chance at a forever home.
Come for the costumes, stay for the community — and let’s make this Howl-o-ween one to remember! 🕸️🐾

Malala Yousafzai embarks on a 16-city international tour to accompany the release of her new memoir, Finding My Way, published by Atria Books.
Moderated by Tony and Emmy nominated actor Arian Moayed, attendees will hear firsthand about Malala’s path from high school loner to reckless college student to a young woman at peace with her past. Through candid, often messy moments like nearly failing exams, getting ghosted and meeting the love of her life, Malala reminds us that real role models aren’t perfect — they’re human. Finding My Way is an intimate look at the life of a young woman taking charge of her destiny — and a testament to the strength it takes to be unapologetically yourself.
A copy of Finding My Way by Malala Yousafzai is included with the purchase of every ticket.

Simon O’Reilly’s work explores the intersections of image-making, narrative form, and emerging technology. Drawing from disciplines such as sculpture, visual effects, cinema, and digital animation, he creates audiovisual experiences that question perception, materiality, and the emotional weight of images. Whether projecting a film in a darkened room, composing digitally altered video, or experimenting with motion capture and game engines, O’Reilly is interested in how screens mediate memory, identity, and presence.
This exhibition brings together a series of self-directed works that explore speculative image-making, ritual, and the boundaries of narrative structure. At its center is Elsewhere, a silent black-and-white short film that follows a solitary oyster harvester encountering a creature made of shells. The work is contemplative and immersive, and this installation is designed to mirror the film’s pacing—slowed, reflective, and intimate. The creature’s costume, which will be exhibited separately, serves as a sculptural anchor that expands the film’s mythology beyond the screen.
Surrounding Elsewhere are smaller works: early short films, digital experiments, motion-captured fragments, and animated 3D prints. These pieces lean into genre—science fiction, speculative fiction, surrealism—but are modest in tone. They were created during moments of curiosity, when experimenting with new tools or aesthetics. Many contain humor, abstraction, or visual ambiguity, and most were made independently, outside the larger collaborative film environment O’Reilly often works in.
Simon O’Reilly’s is a Middletown based media artist, filmmaker and cinematographer. He is an adjunct instructor in CT State Middlesex’s New Media Production program and teaching Film Production this fall semester. O’Reilly holds degrees from Concordia University (Montréal, Canada) and from Middlesex Community College (Middletown, CT).

Explore the shapes and patterns of the natural world through the art of papercutting.
Students will learn to design and cut original compositions using freehand techniques with precision tools and fine scissors. Beginning with simple forms and gradually advancing in complexity, all work is created at a manageable 5 x 7″ scale. Finished papercuts are assembled into a hand-crafted softcover book featuring framed pockets to hold and display the artwork. A reusable page template allows for flexible expansion. The final result will be a beautifully bound collection of intricate, personal designs.
We will also take a field trip to a local professional paper cutter’s studio and gallery for a demonstration.

For all the Baldwin lovers, especially those who showed out monthly for the Year of Baldwin bookclub, we are so thrilled to be hosting Nicholas Boggs , author of Baldwin’s most recent biography, Baldwin: A Love Story, in dialogue with fellow author Emily Bernard. This is an RSVP-only event, in support of Kulturally Lit, so please email us directly to RSVP.
More about the book:
Drawing on new archival material, original research, and interviews, this spellbinding book is the first major biography of James Baldwin in three decades, revealing how profoundly his personal relationships shaped his life and work.
Baldwin: A Love Story, the first major biography of James Baldwin in three decades, reveals how profoundly the writer’s personal relationships shaped his life and work. Drawing on newly uncovered archival material and original research and interviews, this spellbinding book tells the overlapping stories of Baldwin’s most sustaining intimate and artistic relationships: with his mentor, the Black American painter Beauford Delaney; with his lover and muse, the Swiss painter Lucien Happersberger; and with his collaborators, the famed Turkish actor Engin Cezzar and the iconoclastic French artist Yoran Cazac, whose long-overlooked significance as Baldwin’s last great love is explored in these pages for the first time.
Nicholas Boggs shows how Baldwin drew on all the complex forces within these relationships—geographical, cultural, political, artistic, and erotic—and alchemized them into novels, essays, and plays that speak truth to power and had an indelible impact on the civil rights movement and on Black and queer literary history. Richly immersive, Baldwin: A Love Story follows the writer’s creative journey between Harlem, Paris, Switzerland, the southern United States, Istanbul, Africa, the South of France, and beyond. In so doing, it magnifies our understanding of the public and private lives of one of the major literary figures of the twentieth century, whose contributions only continue to grow in influence.
More about Nicholas:
Nicholas Boggs was an undergraduate when he discovered James Baldwin’s out-of-print children’s book, Little Man, Little Man: A Story of Childhood, in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. After he tracked down its illustrator, the French artist Yoran Cazac, he went on to coedit an acclaimed new edition of the book in 2018. His writing has also been anthologized in The Cambridge Companion to James Baldwin, James Baldwin Now, and Speculative Light: The Arts of Beauford Delaney and James Baldwin. He is the recipient of a 2023 Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Beinecke Library and Gilder Lehrman Center at Yale, the Schomburg Center Scholars-in-Residence Program, and the National Humanities Center, as well as residencies at Yaddo and MacDowell. He received his BA in English from Yale, his MFA in creative writing from American University, and his PhD in English from Columbia. Born and raised in Washington, DC, he lives in Brooklyn, New York.

INFINITY SONG
Infinity Song is a Soft Rock band based in New York City, comprised of 4 siblings: Abraham, Angel, Israel, and Momo Boyd. With a blend of tight vocal harmonies, dreamy lyricism, and sublime guitar riffs, the band creates a transcendent experience for the audience on every stage and in their recorded music.
Homeschooled academically and musically, along with their 5 other brothers and sisters, by parents who founded the Boys & Girls Choirs of Detroit, the siblings have been performing in front of audiences since Pre-K. Raised on classical, gospel, and jazz, they draw inspiration from artists like Pat Methany, Marvin Gaye, and The Winans Family.
Infinity Song’s journey began in 2006 when the Boyd patriarch, John Boyd, moved the family from Detroit to New York. The group performed all over the city, from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to Times Square, with Central Park’s Bethesda Fountain becoming their primary stage for the next 12 years. Over time, they turned casual park visitors into loyal fans, eventually being introduced to JAY-Z.
In 2016, the band was signed to Roc Nation by JAY-Z, who encouraged them to stay true to their unique sound. In 2020, they made a giant splash with their debut album Mad Love, which, combined with several viral videos, amassed millions of views and earned the attention of Hollywood's biggest names.
Infinity Song's recent success marks a bold chapter in their musical evolution, which they’ve described as their Metamorphosis. Their expanded sound, blending elements of soft rock, pop, and soulful melodies, has captured the attention of a global audience. The band’s breakout moment came with the viral success of Hater’s Anthem, a track that has been endorsed by Pop star Doja Cat and shared by millions of people worldwide. Leading many listeners to compare the band to legendary 70s groups such as Fifth Dimension, The Mamas and The Papas, and ABBA.
But their journey didn’t stop there. Slow Burn and Sinking Boat, two additional singles from their Metamorphosis era, also became viral sensations, fueling their rise to new heights and captivating even more fans.
In 2024, the band embarked on a successful world tour, playing sold-out shows in Los Angeles, Toronto, London, Manchester, Brussels, Berlin, Paris, and more. They also graced the stages of major festivals such as Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Pitchfork Paris - further solidifying their place in the global music scene.
The band’s latest achievement, a LIVE album, captures the magic of their dynamic performances and continues to fuel excitement for their upcoming tour & singles. With the momentum building, Infinity Song is poised to make an even bigger mark in the year to come.

This exhibition will be on view at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music’s Miller Hall at 406 Prospect Street, New Haven from October 9 - December 5 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12 - 4 p.m., except for Thanksgiving week, when the ISM is closed.
Lucasen Brown: Stanza presents a series of twenty intimate-scaled abstract paintings developed during Brown's time at Yale Institute of Sacred Music/Yale Divinity School (2023-2025). The exhibition also includes a selection of works on paper with corresponding poems by 2025 ISM graduate Emily Chan from a small book-length collaboration.
Each painting has an association for the artist: a life event, a place, a feeling, a person. Brown explores ways the painting process weaves memory, trauma and spiritual repair: "Wholeness, to me, is when I am just a painter in the world who allows a world of feeling into my abstract paintings—a place where everything belongs.” The paintings hold space for viewers to consider their own healing through faith, noticing, and remaining open to uncertainty.
Paint, for Brown, becomes both a surface and a subject. The artist hopes the paintings evoke corporeality, silence, interiority, and sacred everydayness. The repetition of marks on the painting surfaces is meditative and accretive.
The paintings are informed by textile, specifically Lenore Tawney's open-warp weavings; art movements including Minimalism and Pattern Painting and Decoration; and essays, namely Roland Barthes' theory of text and textile.
The exhibition traces the paintings’ transition from grid-based abstraction to a more intuitive and emotionally attuned process that pushes beyond the limitation of the grid. The artist realized his painting world, emotional and liberative, could no longer be confined to a grid.
Free and open to the public.
Exhibition curated by Lucasen Brown.

Tochi Onyebuchi , author of celebrated titles like Riot Baby, Goliath, Harmattan Season, and more, will bless the bookspace with a talk about his newest nonfiction release, [Racebook: A Personal History of the Internet](https://www.possiblefuturesbooks.com/item/wLubr6H3tUamkwaLq__WA)_. This memoir in essays explores Black folks’ growing relationship with the internet and its unique cultural impact, the communities it builds, the original hope for the future it might create, and the inequalities that are still perpetuated by the platform. Join us for what promises to be a profound discussion.
More about the book:
From the author of Hugo and NAACP Image Award finalist Riot Baby, an original memoir in essays that interrogates how identities are shaped and informed in online spaces and how the relationship between race and the Internet has changed in his three decades online.
When Tochi Onyebuchi realized that his acclaimed science fiction and fantasy storytelling career had been centrally preoccupied with race, it prompted him to consider his responsibilities as a Black writer in the Internet age. Excavating the Internet of the late 1990s and early 2000s, Racebook explores how the writer and public intellectual Onyebuchi is today, was formed in that crucible.
Beginning with the current moment when everything, including personal identity, is a matter of dispute, and tracing his online persona in reverse chronological order back to Web 1.0’s promises of greater equality and a bright digital future, Onyebuchi deftly examines the evolution of internet culture and the ways that culture has shifted in the ensuing decades. From the ever-changing nature of personal writing and free expression, to gaming, manga, fandom, and virtual reality—Onyebuchi examines the internet alongside works of literature both classic and new, and asks if our vision for what is possible has really broadened. And given the inequities Black people are still subject to, on and off the page, does the Internet only amplify our failures of imagination?
A new, compelling investigation of race through the lens of the modern Internet age, and a profound intellectual journey in pursuit of community online, Onyebuchi argues for a liberation of the individual behind the code, ultimately asking “Is this a race book or is it not? Is it either-or? Can it be both-and? Can I?”
More about Tochi:
Tochi Onyebuchi is the author of Goliath. His previous fiction includes Riot Baby, a finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and NAACP Image Awards and winner of the New England Book Award for Fiction, the Ignyte Award for Best Novella, and the World Fantasy Award; the Beasts Made of Night series; and the War Girls series. His short fiction has appeared in The Best American Science Fiction and Fantasy, The Year’s Best Science Fiction, and elsewhere. His non-fiction includes the book (S)kinfolk and has appeared in The New York Times, NPR, and the Harvard Journal of African American Public Policy, among other places.
He has earned degrees from Yale University, New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, Columbia Law School, and the Paris Institute of Political Studies.
He currently resides in Connecticut.

RITTZ
A crown is earned, not given, and with two Gold Certified singles, twelve albums, and countless tours around the nation, Rittz has claimed his right to “put a crown on it”.
Traversing the ever-changing landscape of independent hip hop, Rittz’s career boasts a legacy that includes a spot amongst Tech N9ne’s Strange Music alumni. The endeavor produced four Billboard-charting albums and a touring regiment that he carries to this day. In that period of time, Rittz broke through to the worldwide spotlight with an appearance in the highly-coveted BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher.
Following his departure from the label, the Gwinnett County native embraced the undertaking of a fully independent career with the creation of his own imprint, CNT Records. The long-awaited solo venture gave way to seven releases under the CNT banner, and saw Rittz return to the Billboard charts in 2019 with the full-length album, Put A Crown On It.
Influenced by his admiration for down-south production and laid-back melodies, 2023’s MellowLOvationMusic found Rittz adding to the essence that has enveloped his music for years. The album was supported by its lead single, “Who” featuring Project Pat, and a 46-city national tour.
In a testament to Rittz’s ability to elevate himself among the best in hip hop, he soon found himself with two RIAA Gold Certified singles: “Switch Lanes” featuring Mike Posner, and “In My Zone” featuring Mike Posner and B.o.B.
“Since I was a kid, having a gold plaque on the wall has been a goal of mine. Now I have one. The fans, who have supported me and my music, made my dreams come true!”, exclaims Rittz.
The accomplishment that eludes so many artists validates a career built on perseverance and a dedication to the craft of lyricism. Without a breath to waste, Rittz’s aptly named Back For More Tour looks to keep the emcee in the conversation of an ever-evolving industry.
For most, it’s enough to put an exclamation point on things - for Rittz, it’s only right to put a crown on it.

CUCO
Hawthorne, California-based singer, songwriter, and producer Cuco has been challenging musical conventions since his emergence. From the lo-fi bedroom pop of his 2016 debut mixtape "Wannabewithu" to his dreamy first full album, 2019's "Para Mi," Cuco has methodically crafted a distinctive Mexican-American musical identity characterized by bilingual vocals, romantic themes, and psychedelic undertones.
With "Ridin'" – released May 9th – Cuco presents an evolution toward a more intimate sound that balances soulful authenticity with organic instrumentation, featuring lyrics that explore heartbreak, joy, and cultural heritage.
The "old school, romantic" aesthetic of "Ridin'" represents a continuation of elements present since his 2017 single "Lo Que Siento." As Cuco notes, "Even with my synths, if you played those melodies on piano or organ, you'd have a soul record."
Working alongside producer-musician Tom Brenneck (known for collaborations with Bruno Mars and Amy Winehouse), "Ridin'" serves as Cuco's thoughtful homage to Southern California's cultural past – incorporating AM radio influences, Chicano soul classics, elaborate horn arrangements, and vintage automotive culture – while simultaneously offering his mature perspective on relationships and connection.
"Ridin'" rewards listeners with a meaningful musical journey, regardless of destination.

From Frank Pepe’s original hat to celebrity-signed pizza boxes (including Gwyneth Paltrow and Yogi Berra!), if you love the crust, the crunch and the char of New Haven apizza, or simply have strong views on what comprises a good pie, you’ll find something to feed your personal pizza passion in the new exhibit “Pronounced Ah-Beetz,” open now at the New Haven Museum (NHM) through October 2027.
“Pronounced Ah-Beetz” examines the fun, the flavor and the history of pizza, including its origin as an affordable means of feeding workers in the fields of Italy, and how it became the food of the poor in the U.S. The Italian migration to New Haven gave way to Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana, which gave birth to Sally’s Apizza, while a mile away Tony’s Apizza became Modern. How these three establishments became among the most iconically loved pizza restaurants in the country is a major focus.
While the exhibit highlights the “Big 3” original apizza spots in New Haven, it also extends through the family tree of New Haven pizzerias to present a picture of family, food and community that includes a host of other local pizzerias, including: Ernie’s, Zuppardi’s, BAR, Zeneli’s, Olde World, and the Big Green Pizza Truck, among others.

Sharon Lee Mullen-Reynolds knew in High School that she was to be an Art teacher. That is exactly what she did; for 36 years she taught Visual Art in the city of New Haven. Her career hi-light was teaching 22 years at the Betsy Ross Arts Magnet Middle School. During her tenure there she was a published Fellow at Yale N.H.Teachers Institute for 2 years, the Department Chairperson for 8 years and creator of As Far As The Eye Can See a school-wide art exhibit.
Since her retirement in 2016, she has been attending numerous art exhibits and installations locally and in NYC, specifically Frida Kahlo’s exhibit at the Brooklyn Art Museum which led her to create Frida- inspired floral headpieces. In 2017 she started The Kindness Rock art installation at the Branford Festival.
Sharon is an artist who believes that art can heal your soul. In 2022 she sold her headpieces at the Ukrainian Roman Catholic church for the benefit of Ukraine’s War effort and donated 5 Ukrainian Strong “Petals for Peace” paintings to raise additional funds. In 1937, the small farming town of Southbury (between Waterbury and Danbury) was confronted with the news that the German American Bund wanted to build their largest training and indoctrination camp on 175 acres of land that they had purchased. Although the story of what happened was largely forgotten, a documentary film premiered in 2012 that brought that story to national attention, including a prominent position within the original USHMM exhibit “Americans and the Holocaust” that opened in April 2018.
A roundtable discussion featuring the Southbury Historical Society and Arnie Bernstein, author of Swastika Nation, will delve into themes that this story exemplifies and its relevance to today’s environment. “What can we learn from this story?”
Registration is required for this event.
Registration will open on September 29, 2025 @ 6:00pm.

We are so excited to host beloved community member Ainissa Ramirez for the launch of, [Spark](https://www.possiblefuturesbooks.com/item/fDcyhWd7aivWFcutYmHqQ)_, a children’s biography of the inventor of the microphone, Jim West. Join this virtual event and see Ainissa discuss the book with the man who inspired it!
RSVP to join. Link provided here, via email, and on social media as the date approaches!
More about the book:
In this first picture book in the Black Innovators series, meet the insatiably curious Jim West, who invented a vital piece of the device we all carry in our pockets—transforming how the world communicates today.
Young Jim West loves to pull apart whatever electronics he can get his hands on to see how they work. Those around him say there’s no path for a kid like him to become a scientist, but Jim is determined to forge his own way. His knack for all things electric (and luck in landing a summer job offering the freedom to experiment) lead him to invent an important part of the devices we rely on every day. In this picture book biography for science lovers, future inventors, and anyone aiming to inspire the next generation, author Ainissa Ramirez shares the story of the man who patented the foil-electret microphone, a unit integral to everything from cell phones to hearing aids. Just as Jim West’s advocacy for more diversity in the field paved the way for many scientists of color to follow, Spark inspires readers of all ages to follow their curiosity—and see what it ignites. Back matter provides an author’s note, a time line, a bibliography, and more information on the life and work of Jim West.
More about Ainissa:
Ainissa Ramirez dreamed of becoming a scientist since she was a little girl. She got the idea after seeing an African American girl solve problems on a television show called 3-2-1 Contact. In that moment, Ainissa saw her reflection. She later earned her doctorate in materials science from Stanford and worked at Bell Labs, where she met Jim West. She wrote this book—the first of a planned trilogy about Black innovators—so that others can see their reflections in science, too. You can find out more about Ainissa Ramirez at www.ainissaramirez.com.
More about James:
James Edward West, Ph.D., a Bell Laboratories Fellow at Lucent Technologies, is a renowned expert in acoustics. His pioneering work in the 1960s, with co-inventor Gerhard Sessler, led to the invention of the foil electret microphone. Today, 90% of the 2 billion microphones manufactured yearly are electret microphones. These microphones are used in items from recording equipment and professional sound measurement instruments to phones, hearing aids, baby monitors, toys, and computers. Holding over 200 patents, Dr. West’s innovations have transformed sound recording and communications worldwide.
Dr. West is a staunch advocate of diversity in STEM education. While at Bell Labs, he was instrumental in coordinating a summer research program to improve diversity for women and underrepresented persons of color throughout the operating companies of AT&T.
Dr. West is a professor at Johns Hopkins University in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Read more in the National Inventors Hall of Fame https://www.invent.org/inductees/james-ewest

Selected by Yale Drama Series judge and Pulitzer Prize-winner Branden Jacobs-Jenkins.
Playwright Ariel Stess is the winner of the 2025 Yale Drama Series Prize for her compelling and thought-provoking play KARA & EMMA & BARBARA & MIRANDA. Chosen from more than 2,000 entries across 55 countries, and celebrated for its raw and powerful exploration of women's inner lives, connection, and agency.
Jacobs-Jenkins commented, "Stess’s work stood out for the line-by-line sparkle and polish of its composition and the playwright’s cool confidence in the power of well-crafted language alone to transport an audience to and through the vast inner wilds of character…This is dramatic portraiture of the highest order.”

All are welcome to join us for an opening reception for this art exhibit on Wednesday, October 8 at 5 p.m.

Join us on Thursday, October 30th for the Opening Reception of EVER/AFTER! Costumes are welcome.
EVER/AFTER is a collaborative multimedia art project that consists of photographs by Marion Belanger and ink paintings and collage by Martha Willette Lewis. This visual dialogue grew from their shared state of unease and concern regarding the climate/environmental crisis. Belanger makes photographs in the field and prints them on lightweight but durable rice paper that Lewis then soaks, stains, tears and paints upon. The added stress upon the photographic image (some which have already been altered by double exposure and intentional abstraction) symbolically references the damages and disturbances such as extreme storms, forest fires and extinctions that are now so evident in daily life. Manipulated, gilded, stained and torn, the works become artifacts bearing the impact of human touch, just as the land itself does. Fragile and beautiful, Ever/After is a visual lament for the seepages, shifts, losses, extinctions, and extractions made by humankind.
Belanger and Lewis have been collaborating since 2016. They created the permanent installation Insects & Plants: Excavating the Archive at the Connecticut Agricultural Experimental Station in New Haven. The Underneath, an immersive multi-media installation was commissioned by Artspace in 2016. Ever/ After is an ongoing series regarding the threatened environment, and Strange and Beautiful Sound is recent work centered on the coastline of Long Island Sound.

John Higgs, writer and cultural historian, talks with Timothy Young, Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts, about the contemporary relevance of William Blake’s artistic practice.
William Blake (1757–1827) is often described as one of the most compelling yet misunderstood figures in the history of British art and poetry, a genius and “an interruption in cultural history.” In his book William Blake Vs. The World, John Higgs addresses the mystery of Blake. Blake developed a distinct worldview during a turbulent time in history that witnessed the American and French Revolutions. He expressed his radical perspectives on religious belief, politics, and society through highly original illuminated books, watercolors, paintings, and poetry. This conversation situates Blake in his time and connects him to the questions of today.

What’s It Like?
Do you wish you could have more of the kinds of conversations you have late at night where for some reason, you feel safe talking about the things you actually care about?
Bring your friends (or come by yourself) and spend your Thursday night at an event where you know everyone else is there for the same reason.
We'll be offering "big talk" conversational prompts on them to get you started, and we'll have lots of structure to make sure that you actually talk to people and that it's not awkward. Not feeling like answering a particular question? No worries, we'll have plenty to choose from, like, "When are you the happiest?" and, "If you were going to become close friends with me, what would I need to know about you?" We'll give you ground rules to make sure you feel comfortable and safe sharing as much of yourself as possible while still feeling in complete control of how much you divulge.
There will be drinks for sale!
Check-in for this event will begin around 6:15 pm. Please do your best to arrive before 6:30 pm so we can begin as close to on time as possible.
