Who am I? A search for what was never lost by Akosua Aidoo
Overcome the mysteries of the sewing machine and discover how fun and easy it can be! Learn the basics of machine sewing including threading, operating, and troubleshooting.
Practice using the machine and then move on to simple projects for yourself or for gift-giving. Choice of projects will include a 4-patch pin cushion, Boho bags, and items for the home such as pillow covers or a table runner.
Tuition for this class includes a fee of $15 for basic materials provided by CAW.
Lets Get Sewing
Discover the secret to painting on glass, creating beautiful floral designs on glassware. Understand how to make a simple plan for your design and learn about color mixing, and how to apply fluid brush strokes and layering techniques. Each participant will make two vases to keep for themselves, give to your favorite gardener or someone you love. No painting experience necessary.
Gloria Nilsson is a professional teaching artist. She received her degree in Graphic Design from Pratt Institute. After working as a graphic designer for several years, Gloria turned her concentration to the fine arts, exploring pastels, oils, watercolor, and acrylics.
Nilsson is currently painting on silk, where she applies a variety of techniques to fine art paintings and scarves. In 2015, Gloria’s silk painted illustration, Chapter 11: Spellcheck, created for the serialized storybook for young readers, The Mystery of the Great Connecticut Caper, was published by Connecticut Humanities/Connecticut Center for the Book.
Gloria also developed her own unique artisan crafted jewelry line. Her designs are created with woven, sculpted, and wrapped wire techniques, semi-precious stones, Swarovski crystals, polymer clay, precious metals, art glass and pearls. Nilsson teaches the Fashion Illustration program for Summer Fashion Weeks, and she also provides a variety of fine art and mixed media lessons for the Nature Camp program, both at the Arts Center Killingworth. Gloria’s recent work is featured at Spectrum Gallery, Centerbrook, CT, and other indoor/outdoor venues.

New and experienced students will focus on making pottery on the wheel.
Start by using methods of wedging, centering, hand and finger positioning for raising a vessel, and positioning one’s body for dealing with a mass of clay on the wheel. Demonstrations will cover the importance of trimming techniques and various forming processes.
Wear clothes that can get dirty.

Techniques for Wheel Throwing
Explore communication through the fine art of photography.
Learn about black-and-white film photography, including camera operation, composition, and creative controls. Students will learn how to develop film and print their photographs using the darkroom, and will have the opportunity to develop their technical skills through demonstrations, assignments, critiques, and supervised and independent lab work.
Students will have a chance to work on their projects and final portfolios outside of class time during monitored practice sessions.

Develop your pottery skills as you focus on wheel-throwing techniques in stoneware and porcelain.
Lessons will cover both functional and decorative pottery with emphasis on classical forms as we know them. Students will be shown how to apply glazes and/or oxide washes to achieve desired results, such as combining glaze colors and the application of wood ash to create unexpected effects on their work. Wear clothes that can get dirty.

Have you experienced collapsed walls, volcanos, clay that is wonky and bumping around under your fingers. Does your pot get stuck to the wheel, or worse, fly off the wheel?
Not to worry – you just need some instructions on centering, pulling, and trimming your clay. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced ceramicist, you can always learn something new about the beginning, middle, and end of creating a piece of pottery.
Wear clothes that can get dirty and closed toe shoes.

You decide: Explore multiple printmaking techniques and processes or deepen your practice in one area. Use etching, drypoint, woodcut, linocut, monotype, transfer prints, paper lithography, polymer plate lithography, collagraph, silk aquatint, transfer prints, or Chine-collé. Learn new techniques or connect printmaking to other artistic media.
Includes one 3-hour practice session per week during monitored practice hours.
The tuition for this class includes a materials fee of $20 for basic materials provided by CAW.

Learn the basics of preparing and operating a loom. Participants will weave a sampler piece combining a wide range of useful weaves. Beginning students will complete one or two simple projects of their choice by the end of this term. Intermediate and advanced students will weave projects with more complex structures using multi-harness looms. Beginning students have a materials fee of $18 payable to the instructor.

Come join Playful Encounters, our Stress Relief Drama Therapy Group! This is an 8-week series starting on May 1, 2024 running until June 19, 2024. Together in a group, we will use stress-reducing drama therapy techniques and our endless imagination to play, rest, laugh, cry, restore, and connect with like-minded people. This is a chance to get creative, find new ways to cope with stress, connect with others, and express parts of yourself that there is no room for in day-to-day life!

Who am I? A search for what was never lost by Akosua Aidoo
Join teaching artist Lamar Smith for a 6-week intensive course on the storyboard: a graphic organizer that consists of illustrations or images displayed in sequence for the purpose of pre-visualizing a motion picture, animation, motion graphic or interactive media sequence. The class will focus on building the following skills:
- how to depict an action
- how to frame individual panels of the storyboard
- how to layout background elements
- how to create characters
Each week, we will dive into new aspects of the storyboard creation process:
- reviewing fundamental concepts such as grid lines, perspective, and the rule of thirds, character creation
- exploring examples such as The Matrix (1999) and Chicken Run (2000)
- partnering up for critiques and sharing learnings with the group
- creating storyboards!
All ages welcome!

This class will teach you the skills required to begin the journey of animation discovery. Begin with exercises that introduces you to the program and key animation concepts. Then, for the second half, students will create their own original animated shorts using the skills they have been building up from pervious classes.
This class is great for those that have some prior experience animating but it is also accessible to those that may be just beginning their animating journey. iPads will be provided or you may bring your own!
