Description

Spring is here and we all have a touch of “May Fever”. Symptoms are a feverish desire to be outside making our gardens colorful and welcoming places for the season.

The Garden Club of Madison's Plant Sale, May 17, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, set against the picturesque backdrop of the historic Deacon John Graves House gardens in Madison, has the antidote to your garden dilemmas. The sale boasts an exceptional variety of perennials, all lovingly grown by GCM members. These aren't your run-of-the-mill garden center finds; the selection includes rare and unusual specimens that have been nurtured and proven to thrive.  Early birds line up for treasures like trilliums, exotic varieties of hellebores, and an array of native plants that are as hardy as they are beautiful. Not to mention the usual garden staples of iris, daisies, lilies, heuchera, hostas and so on.

"We love sharing our knowledge and special plants with other experienced and inexperienced gardeners," says Bette Zollshan, a dedicated member of the Garden Club who has been organizing this event for several years.

Whether you need a quantity of day lilies to fill a large sunny space, or some unusual ground cover to keep the weeds at bay, this is your one stop. Garden Club members, including Master Gardeners, will be on hand to advise you and share useful tips.

Proceeds of the sale go to maintaining the numerous civic gardens we tend in Madison, including East Wharf Seaside Garden, Deacon John Graves Perennial Gardens, DJG Wildflower Walk, Veterans’ and 9/11 Memorial Gardens, the new Education Garden and orchards at Bauer Park, and adding to the 20,000 daffodils the Club has planted throughout town.

Please visit our website: www.gcmct.org to read about our involvement in the community and the many ways we spread the joy of gardening and care for our environment.

Five gardening tips for right now:

  1. If possible, adopt “no mow May” allowing flowers to bloom in your lawn for early season pollinators. Even leaving a strip can make a difference.

  1. Start a compost pile but be careful not to compost weeds.

  1. Before spring bulbs die back, mark them so you don’t disturb them when adding new plants.

  1. Allow daffodil “greens” to die back for at least 6 weeks. They are the battery for next year’s blooms.

  1. Divide fall blooming perennials – for more info: https://gcmct.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/GCM-Horticulture-Bulletin-June-2022.pdf
