Description

Etching is a form of intaglio printing in which lines are incised into copper through a protected surface and then “etched” in acid. The process dates back to Durer and was used from the Renaissance to modern times. For the past few decades, contemporary printmakers have been developing ways to make printmaking less toxic. This class will explore etching that uses more environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional etching, including non-toxic grounds and water-based inks. Demos will feature different types of water-based inks, B.I.G. and Lascaux grounds, and coffee-lift techniques. Note: although this class is less- toxic, it still may still use products that highly sensitive people find irritating. Includes one 3-hour practice session per week during monitored practice hours. The tuition for this class includes a materials fee of $20 for basic materials provided by CAW.
