Greater New Haven Community Chorus' winter concert
Greater New Haven Community Chorus’ Winter Concert on December 21 Features Benjamin Britten’s “St. Nicolas” and Holiday Classics
Winter Concert | Saturday, Dec. 21 | 7:30 p.m. | Battell Chapel, 400 College St., New Haven, CT.
The Greater New Haven Community Chorus invites all to celebrate the holiday season at its winter concert at Battell Chapel on Saturday, Dec. 21, beginning at 7:30 PM. The program features Benjamin Britten’s dramatic cantata “St. Nicolas,” which recounts the life story of the saint, as well as ancient legends that show his generosity and compassion.
The concert also includes Moses Hogan’s “Glory, Glory, Glory to the Newborn King,” Sweelinck’s “Hodie Christus natus est” and classic holiday favorites that explore and reflect on the identity and history of Santa Claus through a wide range of music.
The title role of “St. Nicolas” will be sung by Dr. Albert Lee, tenor. Lee, associate professor at the Yale School of Music, has performed with the Cincinnati Opera, Opera Las Vegas and Philadelphia Orchestra, among other groups. He has also recorded with the American Spiritual Ensemble and the Bach Choir of Pittsburgh. Additional soloists from the chorus and child soloists from the New Haven Public Schools will be featured.
The Greater New Haven Community Chorus is a non-auditioned, four part (SATB) chorus with a membership of more than 100 voices. The chorus welcomes singers from very diverse backgrounds—ranging from those who have been singing professionally to those who have never sung in a chorus before. GNHCC has created a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for all to sing in community and is honored to celebrate its 61st season. The chorus is directed by Alysoun Kegel, an accomplished conductor, music teacher and soprano, who has been working as the choir director and K-4 music instructor at Worthington Hooker School since 2019.
