Free Documentary Film Screening: As We EMERGE: Monologues of the Formerly Incarcerated

As We EMERGE: Monologues of the Formerly Incarcerated directed by Travis Carbonella, is a documentary film that follows five men from EMERGE Connecticut—a New Haven-based organization that supports formerly incarcerated individuals—as they partner with Quinnipiac University’s theatre department to develop a monologue play shaped from pieces of their lived experiences.
The film traces the path to the final performance, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the show's making. Along the way, the audience witnesses the bravery it takes for each man to share his truth and the resounding support they offer one another. That collective strength—the space they hold for each other—makes this level of vulnerability possible. Through rehearsals, reflections, and raw moments, the film captures both the impact of these monologues on the audience—and the more profound impact on the men themselves. As Jimmy says, "When you speak from the heart, it only has one place to go—and that’s to the heart."
