Exhibition open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm with free parking and admission EXCEPT Thursday, November 27 (Thanksgiving); Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve); and Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day).
For centuries people around the world have celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ and numerous traditions have been incorporated into the Christmas season. Advent calendars, Christmas trees, and the display of the crèche, the three-dimensional representation of the Nativity scene, are just a few of these traditions. These traditions also incorporate other important Christian figures and events in Christ’s life, such as St. Nicholas Day and the Feast of the Epiphany.
This Christmas, the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center presents the exhibit, The Spirit of Christmas, which features crèches and other artwork from around the globe celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and traditions and feast days during the season.
Enjoy the Christmas season at the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center through this exhibit, the supplemental exhibit Away in a Manger and a variety of programs, including our annual Christmastime Family Day. Discover more of our offerings at https://www.michaelmcgivneycenter.org/

Exhibit | The Spirit of Christmas
Exhibition open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm with free parking and admission EXCEPT Thursday, November 27 (Thanksgiving); Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve); and Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day).
Many crèches, the three-dimensional representation of the Nativity scene, feature a diversity of settings and stable designs — the most common of which is an open-front wood structure. However, many artisans model their crèches after buildings and landscapes that are native to their homelands.
This exhibit includes a variety of crèches that showcase different examples of stables and mangers. In addition, it also highlights a handful of works whose settings have been customized for the figures they contain. One of these is the Neapolitan, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, by Cantone and Costabile of Naples, Italy. In addition, a brand-new crèche will be featured in this exhibit: The Nativity at New Haven's St. Mary’s Church, designed by US-based Navidad Nativities, Inc., with figures made in Italy by Original Heide.

EVER / AFTER
Marion Belanger and Martha Willette Lewis (Collaborators)
October 30 - December 8, 2025
Located in The Workshop Gallery, Building 3.
Opening Reception on Thursday, October 30th from 4-7PM
Regular Gallery Hours from 12-4 pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Ever/After is a collaborative multimedia art project that consists of photographs by Marion Belanger and ink paintings and collage by Martha Willette Lewis. This visual dialogue grew from their shared state of unease and concern regarding the climate/environmental crisis. Belanger makes photographs in the field and prints them on lightweight but durable rice paper that Lewis then soaks, stains, tears and paints upon. The added stress upon the photographic image (some which have already been altered by double exposure and intentional abstraction) symbolically references the damages and disturbances such as extreme storms, forest fires and extinctions that are now so evident in daily life. Manipulated, gilded, stained and torn, the works become artifacts bearing the impact of human touch, just as the land itself does. Fragile and beautiful, Ever/After is a visual lament for the seepages, shifts, losses, extinctions, and extractions made by humankind.
Belanger and Lewis have been collaborating since 2016. They created the permanent installation Insects & Plants: Excavating the Archive at the Connecticut Agricultural Experimental Station in New Haven. The Underneath, an immersive multi-media installation was commissioned by Artspace in 2016. Ever/ After is an ongoing series regarding the threatened environment, and Strange and Beautiful Sound is recent work centered on the coastline of Long Island Sound.

The Yale Concert Band - Yale’s premier wind ensemble - Thomas C. Duffy, Music Director, will perform its Fall Concert on Friday, November 16, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. in Woolsey Hall (500 College Street, New Haven). Admission is free and no tickets or reservations are required.
Program:
● “Out of Darkness.” Amidst a world in political turmoil, where “horrors seemed unending and unsolvable, where there would be no victors, only victims,” composer Dana Wilson turned to the plaintive and intense sound of the cello for solace and to help him attempt to process these relentless human tragedies. This three-movement work (Lament, Hope, and Prayer) will feature soloist Ale Okahoshi, Yale School of Music Professor of Cello.
● Duke Ellington composed “A Tone Parallel to Harlem” in 1950 as a “tone poem” of New York's Harlem, evoking the atmosphere of a Sunday stroll through the neighborhood. This version for wind band was arranged and will be guest conducted this evening by James Spinazzola , Director of Winds at Cornell University.
● “Symphony No. 2 ” by David Maslanka is a major work for wind ensemble that deals with themes of loss, grief, and acceptance, framed by the metaphor of crossing a river. Composed in 1983 for the Big Ten Band Directors Association and premiered in 1987, the symphony's movements explore these deep personal themes, with the second movement incorporating the African-American spiritual “Deep River” to represent the journey of “crossing over” to a new state of being.

November 14, 2025 – January 23, 2026
Opening Reception on Tuesday November 18, 4:30-6:30pm at Pegasus Gallery.
Chip Rutan photographs the lower Connecticut River Valley and shoreline. His images depict locations he has known since childhood, and captures the momentary and transient nature of place, memory, and of home.
Photographs in Rutan’s “Space and Time” series were initially created with a Polaroid film camera between 2022 and 2023. The resulting images were digitally scanned, edited, and reprinted, while retaining the distinctly imperfect visual qualities of the Polaroid media. His human subjects were photographed from afar, so their likeness is impossible to discern, yet each composition contains a nostalgic and psychologically charged atmosphere of familiarity. Subjects walk along the beach, lounge, swim, and in many works, they appear to blur into the haze of dominant horizon lines. Rutan describes his photographs best as “ephemeral and dreamlike… portal(s) to a simpler time and place.”
Rutan lives in Old Saybrook, and has exhibited his photographs regionally and nationally. He holds an MFA in Visual Art from Vermont College of Fine Arts, an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (at Hartford), and a BA in Mathematics from the University of New Haven. See more of Rutan’s work on his website at: https://www.chiprutan.com

Explore the shapes and patterns of the natural world through the art of papercutting.
Students will learn to design and cut original compositions using freehand techniques with precision tools and fine scissors. Beginning with simple forms and gradually advancing in complexity, all work is created at a manageable 5 x 7″ scale. Finished papercuts are assembled into a hand-crafted softcover book featuring framed pockets to hold and display the artwork. A reusable page template allows for flexible expansion. The final result will be a beautifully bound collection of intricate, personal designs.
We will also take a field trip to a local professional paper cutter’s studio and gallery for a demonstration.
This is a course for both beginners and those with some experience. Many of the basic skills of bookbinding will be taught including measuring, cutting, folding, and gluing.
Enrollment in this class includes one 3 hour monitored practice session a week.

Schwarzman Sessions are peer-led gatherings where conversations generate collaborations and move ideas into action. Because seats are limited, registrants will be automatically placed on the waitlist and will be notified via email if they are selected to participate.
Human life is full of stories. Patients exist not in individual case studies of illnesses but rather in the context of their life narratives. Join Dr. Matthew Morrison and Galen Jones MPH/MBA ’26 for this engaging Schwarzman Session at the intersection of human experience and medical practice.
In this compelling lunchtime conversation, consider how physicians and public health workers might leverage the humanities to more effectively navigate patient care. Discuss how the ability to reconcile the humanities and medicine could be applied to healthcare in a broad range of settings — from emergency medicine in New York City hospitals to combat zones in Ukraine.
Schwarzman Session - The Humanity in Humanitarian Medicine
This exhibition will be on view at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music’s Miller Hall at 406 Prospect Street, New Haven from October 9 - December 5 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12 - 4 p.m., except for Thanksgiving week, when the ISM is closed.
Lucasen Brown: Stanza presents a series of twenty intimate-scaled abstract paintings developed during Brown's time at Yale Institute of Sacred Music/Yale Divinity School (2023-2025). The exhibition also includes a selection of works on paper with corresponding poems by 2025 ISM graduate Emily Chan from a small book-length collaboration.
Each painting has an association for the artist: a life event, a place, a feeling, a person. Brown explores ways the painting process weaves memory, trauma and spiritual repair: "Wholeness, to me, is when I am just a painter in the world who allows a world of feeling into my abstract paintings—a place where everything belongs.” The paintings hold space for viewers to consider their own healing through faith, noticing, and remaining open to uncertainty.
Paint, for Brown, becomes both a surface and a subject. The artist hopes the paintings evoke corporeality, silence, interiority, and sacred everydayness. The repetition of marks on the painting surfaces is meditative and accretive.
The paintings are informed by textile, specifically Lenore Tawney's open-warp weavings; art movements including Minimalism and Pattern Painting and Decoration; and essays, namely Roland Barthes' theory of text and textile.
The exhibition traces the paintings’ transition from grid-based abstraction to a more intuitive and emotionally attuned process that pushes beyond the limitation of the grid. The artist realized his painting world, emotional and liberative, could no longer be confined to a grid.
Free and open to the public.
Exhibition curated by Lucasen Brown.
All are welcome to join us for an opening reception for this art exhibit on Wednesday, October 8 at 5 p.m.

Pathway to Trades: Cohort 3
Join us for an important discussion about the life of one of the most influential black legislators in America through the biography written by Dr. Marion Orr , House of DiggsThe Rise and Fall of America's Most Consequential Black Congressman, Charles C. Diggs Jr. Dr. Orr will be in conversation with the honorable Judge Clifton Graves. Come learn with us!
More about the book:
At the height of the civil rights movement, Charles C. Diggs Jr. (1922–1998) was the consummate power broker. In a political career spanning 1951 to 1980, Diggs, Michigan’s first Black member of Congress, was the only federal official to attend the trial of Emmett Till’s killers, worked behind the scenes with Martin Luther King Jr., and founded the Congressional Black Caucus. He was also the chief architect of legislation that restored home rule to Washington, DC, and almost single-handedly ignited the American anti-apartheid movement in the 1960s.
Drawing on extensive archival research, including Diggs’s rarely seen personal papers, FBI documents, and original interviews with family members and political associates, political scientist Marion Orr reveals that Diggs practiced a politics of strategic moderation. Orr argues that this quiet approach was more effective than the militant race politics practiced by Adam Clayton Powell and more appealing than the conservative Chicago-style approach of William Dawson—two of Diggs’s better-known Black contemporaries.
Vividly written and deeply researched, House of Diggs is the first biography of Congressman Charles C. Diggs Jr., one of the most consequential Black federal legislators in US history. Congressman Diggs was a legislative lion whose unfortunate downfall punctuated his distinguished career and pushed him and his historic accomplishments out of sight. Now, for the first time, House of Diggs restores him to his much-deserved place in the history of American politics.
More about Dr. Orr:
Marion Orr is a political scientist and the inaugural Frederick Lippitt Professor of Public Policy at Brown University. An award-winning author, his work includes Black Social Capital: The Politics of School Reform in Baltimore. He was awarded the Biographers International Organization’s Francis “Frank” Rollin Fellowship for his work on Congressman Diggs.
More about Judge Graves:
The Hon. Clifton E. Graves, Jr. is a judge for the New Haven Probate Court (District 38) in New Haven County, Connecticut. He was elected to the bench on November 7, 2017.
Prior to his election, Graves was the manager of Project Fresh Start, the City of New Haven's program to help integrate formerly incarcerated individuals back into the community. He also spent time as the Community Grants Organizer for Toni Harp, the Mayor of New Haven (2014).
Graves earned a bachelor's degree from Tufts University in 1975. He then completed a J.D. at the Georgetown University Law Center in 1980.
After graduating from law school, Graves pursued a legal career that included eleven years as the Head of Diversity and Equity at Southern Connecticut State University. He was also a staff attorney for the Housing Authority of New Haven, and he performed two stints as an assistant corporation counsel for the New Haven Office of Corporation Counsel.
His memberships have included the boards of AIDS Interfaith Network, the NAACP, Community Mediation, and the Commission on Equal Opportunities.

Diane Chandler, Connecticut artist, will demonstrate "Painting Portraits in Oils: Depicting Light and Mixing Flesh Tones". She will do a head study in oil of a model from life, showing how she begins a portrait painting. Diane will explain how she sets up her palette, mixes her flesh tones and how she starts by simplifying her values. If you have interest in painting portraits in any medium, this is a "do not miss" presentation.
Diane Chandler is a contemporary representational painter who loves the craft of traditional oil painting. She is fascinated by the play of light on forms, whether they be human, plant or inanimate. For several years she concentrated on portraiture, where she aspired to reveal some aspect of the sitter’s character, with the occasional addition of a bit of humor.

From Frank Pepe’s original hat to celebrity-signed pizza boxes (including Gwyneth Paltrow and Yogi Berra!), if you love the crust, the crunch and the char of New Haven apizza, or simply have strong views on what comprises a good pie, you’ll find something to feed your personal pizza passion in the new exhibit “Pronounced Ah-Beetz,” open now at the New Haven Museum (NHM) through October 2027.
“Pronounced Ah-Beetz” examines the fun, the flavor and the history of pizza, including its origin as an affordable means of feeding workers in the fields of Italy, and how it became the food of the poor in the U.S. The Italian migration to New Haven gave way to Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana, which gave birth to Sally’s Apizza, while a mile away Tony’s Apizza became Modern. How these three establishments became among the most iconically loved pizza restaurants in the country is a major focus.
While the exhibit highlights the “Big 3” original apizza spots in New Haven, it also extends through the family tree of New Haven pizzerias to present a picture of family, food and community that includes a host of other local pizzerias, including: Ernie’s, Zuppardi’s, BAR, Zeneli’s, Olde World, and the Big Green Pizza Truck, among others.
