Premier Concerts and Manic Presents:

BLACKBERRY SMOKE

Throughout their career, Blackberry Smoke have embodied Georgia's rich musical legacy, honoring the people, places and sounds of their home state. Their latest album, Be Right Here draws inspiration from Southern rock, blues-leaning classic rock and rootsy vintage country and is full of vivid and relatable characters that ensure the songs often resemble rich short stories.

Over the past two decades, Blackberry Smoke has amassed the following of a loyal fanbase, leading their last six full-length albums to achieve great chart success, including 2021’s You Hear Georgia, which reached #1 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart and 2024’s Be Right Here, which reached the top 5 on the Top Current Album Sales chart.

Touring relentlessly, the band know a little something about hitting the road in order to find a place to belong, and supported by the strong fanbase of Brothers and Sisters, legions of whom travel across the globe to support the band, they in turn give fans a palace to belong.

Over the years the band has appeared across the globe on stages such as Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, Summerfest, Glastonbury, Download UK, to name a few, and has no plans to stop anytime soon.

For Blackberry Smoke, embracing the light and finding the silver lining are once again at the heart of what they do best.

JASON SCOTT & THE HIGH HEAT

Caught halfway between amplified Americana and heartland roots-rock, Jason Scott & the High Heat create a sweeping, dynamic sound that reaches far beyond the traditions of their Oklahoma City home. Too loud for folk music and too textured for Red Dirt, this is the sound of a genuine band rooted in groove, grit, and its own singular spirit, led by a songwriter whose unique past -- a Pentecostal upbringing, years logged as a preacher-in-training, and an eventual crisis of faith -- has instilled both a storyteller's delivery and an unique perspective about life, love, and listlessness in the modern world.

Case in point, in 2018 Scott earned critical acclaim as a songwriter when the second track "She Good To Me" off his DIY EP Living Rooms (2017 landed on NPR World Cafe's Heavy Rotation: 10 Songs Public Radio Can't Stop Playing alongside songs by MGMT, Moby, and Jade Bird. It was only the beginning of a new life on a new kind of stage.

A multi-instrumentalist, producer, engineer, and session musician, Scott spent a year balancing life on the road and life in the studio, where he produced albums for Americana artists like Carter Sampson, Ken Pomeroy, and Nellie Clay. Things began to expand as he assembled the High Heat, a band of multi-faceted musicians and roots-rock Renaissance men who, like their frontman, juggled multiple artistic pursuits. Together, Jason Scott & the High Heat have since become a self-contained creative collective whose talents include songwriting, music production, photography, video direction, and more.

In 2022 the band made a pronounced impact with their debut album Castle Rock, a melting pot of sounds from the heartland sweep of Tom Petty to the story-driven Americana of Jason Isbell, the nostalgic hooks of '90s country music to the sharp songwriting of James Taylor mixed with John Prine's lyrical blend of cutting insight and laugh-out-loud humor. The album also spent two months in the Top 50 of the Americana chart reaching all the way to #36 and outlets across the globe started taking notice of this groove oriented, rock-infused band with crazy brilliant songs. NPR, The Boot, Holler, BBC Radio Scotland, Wide Open Country, Bluegrass Situation, Farce The Music, Ditty TV, Americana Music Show and Gimme Country all applauded the band's first full length effort with emphasis on the bright future to come.

During this time their live show was catching equal recognition branding them as "the band to see" pretty much anywhere they played. In short order they were on the road performing at some of the most renowned music festivals including the Stagecoach festival, Born and Raised Fest, Mile 0 Fest, Norman Music Festival and the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival, and supported a variety of bands including Band of Heathens, Eli Young Band, Gin Blossoms, Josh Abbott, Vandoliers, The Damn Quails, MIPSO, Parker Millsap, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Kaitlin Butts.

Jason Scott & the High Heat continue to pick up speed, most recently with their latest single "Me & The Bottle" off their forthcoming album American Grin slated for release on July 19th. The single has drawn massive attention hitting the Top 10 on the Texas Music Chart, and tripling the band's social media numbers in just a few short weeks. To date it has amassed over 100,000 spins online.

Scott puts the song's popularity into perspective. "We recorded 'Me & The Bottle' (Hungover You) near the Rio Grande, at Sonic Ranch Studios on a Motown console, and Stevie Ray Vaughan's old Esquire. This song is meant to be listened to with a little bit of chicken fried, cold beer on a Friday night, and a pair of jeans that fit JUST RIGHT... It's a tongue and cheek narrative about a man stuck at the bottom of a bottle with his stubbornness, and antiquated views on masculinity." Co-produced by Jason Scott and Taylor Johnson, American Grin is an audio maverick cloaked in the band's trademark style of intelligent musings soused in fine grooves and palpable textures.

Jason Scott & the High Heat are: Jason Scott (lead vocals, guitar), Gabriel Mor (guitars), Ryan Magnani (bass), Bobby Wade (drums), Garrison Brown (guitars, keys), Taylor Johnson (guitars, keys, aux)

Exhibit Hours:

Wednesday – Friday, 10 am to 5 pm, Saturday, 12 to 5 pm.

From Frank Pepe’s original hat to celebrity-signed pizza boxes (including Gwyneth Paltrow and Yogi Berra!), if you love the crust, the crunch and the char of New Haven apizza, or simply have strong views on what comprises a good pie, you’ll find something to feed your personal pizza passion in the new exhibit “Pronounced Ah-Beetz,” open now at the New Haven Museum (NHM) through October 2027.

“Pronounced Ah-Beetz” examines the fun, the flavor and the history of pizza, including its origin as an affordable means of feeding workers in the fields of Italy, and how it became the food of the poor in the U.S. The Italian migration to New Haven gave way to Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana, which gave birth to Sally’s Apizza, while a mile away Tony’s Apizza became Modern. How these three establishments became among the most iconically loved pizza restaurants in the country is a major focus.

While the exhibit highlights the “Big 3” original apizza spots in New Haven, it also extends through the family tree of New Haven pizzerias to present a picture of family, food and community that includes a host of other local pizzerias, including: Ernie’s, Zuppardi’s, BAR, Zeneli’s, Olde World, and the Big Green Pizza Truck, among others.

Exhibition open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm with free parking and admission EXCEPT Thursday, November 27 (Thanksgiving); Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve); and Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day).

For centuries people around the world have celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ and numerous traditions have been incorporated into the Christmas season. Advent calendars, Christmas trees, and the display of the crèche, the three-dimensional representation of the Nativity scene, are just a few of these traditions. These traditions also incorporate other important Christian figures and events in Christ’s life, such as St. Nicholas Day and the Feast of the Epiphany.

This Christmas, the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center presents the exhibit, The Spirit of Christmas, which features crèches and other artwork from around the globe celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and traditions and feast days during the season.

Enjoy the Christmas season at the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center through this exhibit, the supplemental exhibit Away in a Manger and a variety of programs, including our annual Christmastime Family Day. Discover more of our offerings at https://www.michaelmcgivneycenter.org/

Exhibition open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm with free parking and admission EXCEPT Thursday, November 27 (Thanksgiving); Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve); and Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day).

Many crèches, the three-dimensional representation of the Nativity scene, feature a diversity of settings and stable designs — the most common of which is an open-front wood structure. However, many artisans model their crèches after buildings and landscapes that are native to their homelands.

This exhibit includes a variety of crèches that showcase different examples of stables and mangers. In addition, it also highlights a handful of works whose settings have been customized for the figures they contain. One of these is the Neapolitan, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, by Cantone and Costabile of Naples, Italy. In addition, a brand-new crèche will be featured in this exhibit: The Nativity at New Haven's St. Mary’s Church, designed by US-based Navidad Nativities, Inc., with figures made in Italy by Original Heide.

This exhibition will be on view at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music’s Miller Hall at 406 Prospect Street, New Haven from October 9 - December 5 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12 - 4 p.m., except for Thanksgiving week, when the ISM is closed.

Lucasen Brown: Stanza presents a series of twenty intimate-scaled abstract paintings developed during Brown's time at Yale Institute of Sacred Music/Yale Divinity School (2023-2025). The exhibition also includes a selection of works on paper with corresponding poems by 2025 ISM graduate Emily Chan from a small book-length collaboration.

Each painting has an association for the artist: a life event, a place, a feeling, a person. Brown explores ways the painting process weaves memory, trauma and spiritual repair: "Wholeness, to me, is when I am just a painter in the world who allows a world of feeling into my abstract paintings—a place where everything belongs.” The paintings hold space for viewers to consider their own healing through faith, noticing, and remaining open to uncertainty.

Paint, for Brown, becomes both a surface and a subject. The artist hopes the paintings evoke corporeality, silence, interiority, and sacred everydayness. The repetition of marks on the painting surfaces is meditative and accretive.

The paintings are informed by textile, specifically Lenore Tawney's open-warp weavings; art movements including Minimalism and Pattern Painting and Decoration; and essays, namely Roland Barthes' theory of text and textile.

The exhibition traces the paintings’ transition from grid-based abstraction to a more intuitive and emotionally attuned process that pushes beyond the limitation of the grid. The artist realized his painting world, emotional and liberative, could no longer be confined to a grid.

Free and open to the public.

Exhibition curated by Lucasen Brown.

By Nadia Younes, Visiting Artist

We begin with clay and wire, focusing on realism and the human form, then move into assemblage and reconfigured materials. By the end, participants will have completed 2–3 projects that balance grounded technique with imaginative exploration, all framed by the question: What stories and memories do materials carry when given a second life?

Call the museum on weekdays from 9 to 5 with any questions or scholarship inquiries.

Join the Rape Crisis Center of Milford & the Beth-El Center on Thursday November 13th for our 3rd annual Barrels for a Cause event at Stappa Vineyard! This year, we have partnered once again with Wines and More of Milford to hand pick our barrels, but are mixing things up with a new distillery partner, SoNo 1420! Enjoy an evening of good food, great spirits, and fun games & raffles to support two local causes, then take home your very own bottle of our custom bourbon! This event highlights the intersection of the impact that our two agencies have on our community, and the overall unity of Milford and the surrounding areas. Every dollar raised from this event will be split between our two organizations. We are proud to partner with small businesses like Wines and More! and SoNo 1420 in our community who support both of our missions.

The Beth-El Center’s mission is to extend dignity and respect to all individuals and families while connecting them to housing, food and services within their communities. The mission of the Rape Crisis Center of Milford is to provide support and a voice for victims of sexual assault and misconduct and to prevent future instances through education.

TICKETS ON SALE NOW: BarrlesForACause2025.eventbrite.com

Kennebec / Slow Meadow at Lyric Hall

Kennebec – in support of their new LP The Water Wheel – and Slow Meadow are heading up the East Coast. Both instrumental acts blur genre in favor of something more personal and elemental. Expect weightless ambient textures, earthbound grooves, warm improvisations, and an immersive, soothing, transportive sonic experience.

Kennebec blends jazz, ambient/electronic, folk, and hip-hop. The current quartet – led by composer/guitarist Eric Phillips – features violinist Daisy Castro, woodwindist John Savage, and Peter Manheim on drums. Kennebec has shared the stage with artists like Kevin Morby & Arooj Aftab, collaborated with heavyweights including Samuel T Herring, Sudan Archives, Alfa Mist and Miguel Atwood Ferguson and contributed to the soundtracks of countless films including the Obama's Emmy-Winning Netflix Series Working and Alexandre Payne's Oscar-winning film The Holdovers.

The Water Wheel is a globally inspired work, with inspiration drawing from Yazz Ahmed’s Bahraini roots, Brazilian jazz guitar legends Luiz Bonfa, Toquinho and Arthur Verocai, and Japanese heroes Ryuichi Sakamoto and Toru Takemitsu. A distinctly American sound of cinematic chamber folk and gospel, the record is both a cathartic celebration of life and a soothing balm for turbulent times, showcasing Phillips’ gift for weaving personal storytelling with novel genre-defying musical tapestries. With The Water Wheel , Phillips offers his most accomplished and heartfelt work yet -- a record that embraces change, celebrates connection, and finds peace in the constant ebb and flow of life.

Slow Meadow is Houston multi-instrumentalist Matt Kidd. Kidd's releases as Slow Meadow have been celebrated by the New York Observer, NPR's Stephen Thompson, Echoes' John Diliberto, and who sampled Lachrymosia for the platinum-selling song on his debut album, FREE 6LACK. In 2022, Kidd provided the original soundtrack to the film, "My Mind & Me".

With a foundation of piano, string orchestration, and an ever-evolving electronic palette, Slow Meadow has traversed the borders of neoclassical and minimalist electronics with Upstream Dream, delivering a deeply personal and transportive experience that speaks directly to the ebbs and flows and mundanity and marvels of life. With sublime patience, understated elegance, and surreal atmosphere, Slow Meadow savors the present, remembers the past, and imagines what could be.

Oddfellows Playhouse Teen Repertory Company and ARTFARM present Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet November 13-15 and 21- 22. All performances will be held at Oddfellows Playhouse, 128 Washington Street, Middletown.

Romeo and Juliet is a timeless classic that speaks to the courageous and tender hearts of teens, the meddling of families, and the conflicts of ‘us and them.’ It explores young love, grief and delight, misunderstanding, self-harm, and how choices ripple through a community. Sword fighting, Renaissance dance, broken hearts, wordplay, balconies, poison, young love—and some of the most beautiful poetry e’er writ’.

“The cast of Romeo and Juliet—courageous 14- to 21-year-olds—have leapt into the rich Renaissance world with its bawdy humor, pure innocence, and life-and-death stakes. They’ve immersed themselves in verse, metrical structure and text analysis, fight and dance while revealing their hearts with grace, elegance and truth” says Marcella Trowbridge Director, Romeo & Juliet and Executive Director of ARTFARM. She continues “These brave young souls are encouraged by a supportive team of professional artists helping them grow and shine.”

Romeo & Juliet, which features a cast of 15 performers ages 14 -21, is directed by Marcella Trowbridge. Scenic Design is by Dan Schmidt, Costume Design by Christian Milik, Sound Design by Joseph Getter, Choreography by Kaia Monroe, Fight Choreography by Meg Buckner Furtick, Lighting Design by Aaron Westcott, Technical Direction Juan Galan, and Properties Design by Pam Lang.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $12 for kids and students. “Big Hearted Oddfellow” tickets are available for $25 for anyone who really loves and values theater and its impact on the lives of young people. November 13 at 7 pm is a “Pay What You Can” Preview.

 Performances will be at 7 pm on November 13, 14, 15, 21, 22 @ 7 pm and November 22 @ 1pm. Romeo & Juliet contains mature situations.

In Pegasus Gallery and The Niche:

November 14, 2025 – January 23, 2026

Opening Reception on Tuesday November 18, 4:30-6:30pm at Pegasus Gallery.

Chip Rutan photographs the lower Connecticut River Valley and shoreline.  His images depict locations he has known since childhood, and captures the momentary and transient nature of place, memory, and of home.

Photographs in Rutan’s “Space and Time” series were initially created with a Polaroid film camera between 2022 and 2023. The resulting images were digitally scanned, edited, and reprinted, while retaining the distinctly imperfect visual qualities of the Polaroid media.  His human subjects were photographed from afar, so their likeness is impossible to discern, yet each composition contains a nostalgic and psychologically charged atmosphere of familiarity. Subjects walk along the beach, lounge, swim, and in many works, they appear to blur into the haze of dominant horizon lines. Rutan describes his photographs best as “ephemeral and dreamlike… portal(s) to a simpler time and place.”

Rutan lives in Old Saybrook, and has exhibited his photographs regionally and nationally. He holds an MFA in Visual Art from Vermont College of Fine Arts, an MBA from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (at Hartford), and a BA in Mathematics from the University of New Haven. See more of Rutan’s work on his website at: https://www.chiprutan.com

Pegasus Gallery is located within the library on the first floor of Chapman Hall.

Hours: Monday-Thursday: 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m.; Friday: 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. when classes are in session. Winter break hours are Mondays-Fridays 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Guilford Art Center’s annual Holiday Expo returns November 14, 2025 – January 11, 2026, offering an extraordinary selection of handcrafted gifts from hundreds of local and regional artists and makers.

For the season, the GAC Shop doubles in size, filling both the shop and the gallery space with one-of-a-kind treasures: jewelry, home goods, clothing, accessories, ornaments, specialty foods, and more. Each piece is handmade with care, making the gift as unique as the person receiving it.

New this year, the Holiday Expo will also feature a special section of work by members of the Lyme Artisans Guild , known for their exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to preserving traditional techniques. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase their beautiful, locally made creations alongside other Holiday Expo artists. The Guild’s mission closely aligns with GAC’s, making for an exciting seasonal partnership.

“The Holiday Expo is a celebration of creativity and community,” says Maureen Belden, Executive Director of Guilford Art Center. “When you shop here, you’re not just finding a beautiful, handmade gift—you’re supporting local artists, investing in their livelihoods, and helping to sustain the arts in our region. Every purchase makes a difference.”

Lyme Artisans Guild President Carol Stanland adds, “Handcrafts are very much about community and making connections with people in a community, making any acquisition more meaningful than it would otherwise be. We at LAG very much enjoy sharing our process as well as our products. Knowledge about process gives our products depth.”

New items arrive throughout the season, so there’s always something fresh to discover. Personal shoppers are available to help with selections, and businesses can arrange custom gift packages for employees.

 Events:

  • November 14: Opening Reception, 5–7pm
  • November 15: Egyptian Coil Chaining Demo (for wire jewelry) with Michelle Pearson
  • November 22: Gel Printing on Paper Demo with Barbara Eaglesham
  • December 13: Color and Pattern Matching in Fabric Design Demo with Carol Stanland

Proceeds benefit the artists and fund Guilford Art Center’s educational and community programs.

Holiday Expo Hours:

Started in 2021, our Collection now spans nearly 300 songs from over 175 unique, alien artists, in dozens of genres, including electronic, hip-hop, rock, pop, blues, and more.

We are happy to share every single album and beat in our Collection with the Milford community for viewing and listening! Select albums and EPs are available on vinyl and cassette for extended listening, and art prints, t-shirts, and more are available for purchase to show your support.

Intergalactic Beets Records will give Audionauts the opportunity to learn about the history of the IBP, listen to every song in our discography, and take home a piece of the universe.

 EVER / AFTER

Marion Belanger and Martha Willette Lewis (Collaborators)

October 30 - December 8, 2025

Located in The Workshop Gallery, Building 3.

Opening Reception on Thursday, October 30th from 4-7PM

Regular Gallery Hours from 12-4 pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Ever/After is a collaborative multimedia art project that consists of photographs by Marion Belanger and ink paintings and collage by Martha Willette Lewis. This visual dialogue grew from their shared state of unease and concern regarding the climate/environmental crisis. Belanger makes photographs in the field and prints them on lightweight but durable rice paper that Lewis then soaks, stains, tears and paints upon. The added stress upon the photographic image (some which have already been altered by double exposure and intentional abstraction) symbolically references the damages and disturbances such as extreme storms, forest fires and extinctions that are now so evident in daily life. Manipulated, gilded, stained and torn, the works become artifacts bearing the impact of human touch, just as the land itself does. Fragile and beautiful, Ever/After is a visual lament for the seepages, shifts, losses, extinctions, and extractions made by humankind.

Belanger and Lewis have been collaborating since 2016. They created the permanent installation Insects & Plants: Excavating the Archive at the Connecticut Agricultural Experimental Station in New Haven. The Underneath, an immersive multi-media installation was commissioned by Artspace in 2016. Ever/ After is an ongoing series regarding the threatened environment, and Strange and Beautiful Sound is recent work centered on the coastline of Long Island Sound.

In this lecture, Kim Benzel, Curator in Charge of Ancient West Asian Art, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, shares how the museum considers provenance research an institutional priority and responsibility. Over the past several years, the focus on provenance research has led to important reevaluations of The Met’s ancient West Asian holdings, which in turn have led to several voluntary, self-initiated restitutions. While these efforts on their own are critical, they have also served as opportunities to foster sustained relationships with source countries—through research collaborations and knowledge exchanges, outreach to local communities and celebrations of their heritage, and residencies for colleagues from the region. Under custodial agreements, objects of ancient West Asian art have even been newly welcomed into the collection. The talk will be followed by a Q&A.

This lecture is part of a series focused on issues of provenance. The program is supported by the Yale University Art Gallery’s Martin A. Ryerson Lectureship Fund, the Yale Peabody Museum’s Babylonian Collection, Yale’s Institute for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, the Yale University Library, and the Collaborations to Study Materiality & Objects program at the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale.

Magic for Animals is an unapologetically witty and insightful one-woman show employing sparkling, incisive humor and magic to conjure laughs and hard-hitting truths. In Magic,  Liz Toonkel  explores pressing issues of animal welfare, climate change, and sexism through a continuous personal narrative woven throughout each illusion, ultimately paving a way forward with empathy and self-awareness. Edinburgh critics exclaim that “Liz Toonkel achieves the impossible, fusing heartfelt sleepover confessions with insane animal magic” (To Do List) and note how “the audience waits on her every word” (FringeReview)

“The piece is clean, heartfelt, and demonstrative of a level of craft that will make it a Fringe Festival standout.” Andrew Childs, Broadway World

Meet the Artist:

Liz Toonkel

“Her wit, warm persona, and at times vulnerability, are enough to make us follow her wherever she goes, even when it challenges our own preconceptions about our place in the animal kingdom.”

About the exhibition:

Installed at the Schwarzman Center,  “Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & in New Haven,”  illuminates ongoing research that recovers the essential role of Black people throughout Yale and New Haven history. The exhibition puts back at the center of local storytelling people who have always been central to local history. It celebrates Black community building, resistance, and resilience on campus and in New Haven.

The show includes nearly one hundred images of Yale’s earliest Black students from the 1800s and early 1900s, many of whom had deep New Haven connections. The Schwarzman exhibition features compelling reproductions of photographs of New Haveners who were custodians of Yale. The Luke, Grimes, Creed, Park, and Bassett families, among the many people key to founding and sustaining Yale, and who are heralded in the show.

“Shining Light on Truth: Black Lives at Yale & in New Haven” showcases the proposal, made and thwarted in 1831, to build a Black college in New Haven. It also highlights the successful efforts of Black students in the 1960s to establish the Afro-American Cultural Center and Afro-American Studies at Yale.

This exhibition brings forth knowledge kept alive in archives and memory for many centuries—even when the dominant culture chose to ignore, bury, or forget. It extends the work of the Yale and Slavery Research Project and follows from the exhibition, “Shining Light on Truth: New Haven, Yale and Slavery,” at the New Haven Museum from February 16, 2024 – March 1, 2025.

The exhibition team includes David Jon Walker ’23 MFA, lead designer, and Michael Morand ’87 ’93 M.Div., lead curator, with Timeica Bethel ’11, Robert Laird Brown, Jennifer Coggins, Mohamed Diallo ’26, Regina Mason, Hope McGrath, Carlynne Robinson, and Charles Warner, Jr.

Writer and educator Kelly Foster Lundquist will bless the bookspace with a reading and talk about her debut memoir,Beard . Kelly will be in conversation with Samuel Ernest , local author ofCoarse Work. All are welcome; hope to see you here...

More about the book:

Kelly Foster Lundquist was nineteen when she met Devin at church camp in the late ’90s. Immediately inseparable, the two bonded over bootleg Tori Amos recordings and a sense of disconnection from the spiritual fervor of their fellow camp counselors. Devin was classically handsome and Kelly on the plain side of pretty, but they matched. Their twinned search for God, acceptance, and love would profoundly shape the rest of their lives.

In this striking debut memoir, Lundquist revisits her relationship with Devin twenty years after their divorce, as she investigates the “beard” trope in literature, culture, and her own romantic life. The straight woman who unwittingly marries a gay man is either a laughingstock or a fool—or both—in the popular imagination. And yet reality—much like desire—is more wild. Reality is midnight pad Thai, tenderness in Ralph Lauren sheets, ritual visits to Blockbuster, and beginning a PhD in queer theory while your husband secretly struggles to reconcile his double life.

A tour de force of empathy and vivid prose, Beard reckons honestly with the harm done to both husband and wife by churches that required rigid performances of gender and sexuality. In contrast, Lundquist learns to let go of brittle certainties as she embraces what her first marriage taught her about risk and redemption.

More about Kelly:

Kelly Foster Lundquist teaches writing at North Hennepin Community College in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. A 2013 Milton postgraduate fellow at Image Journal and Kenyon Review writers’ alum, her work has appeared in Last Syllable Lit, Whale Road Review, and The Academy Stories among other places. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University and an MA in English from Mississippi College, and remains a PhD dropout. Lundquist lives in a little red house by the Mississippi River with her spouse and daughter.

More about Samuel in his own words:

I am a writer and a doctoral candidate in theology in Yale’s Religious Studies department. Across my academic and personal writing, I weave together Christian theology, gay sexuality, and spirituality. I am an assistant editor at the Yale Review. I am starting a small press called Homodoxy for gay/queer literature and theology, new and old.

You can learn more about the press here and follow the press’s Substack, The Rearview, for monthly views, interviews, and reviews, here.

Welcome to the world of the Intergalactic Beets Project, a fictional intergalactic record label preserving the Universe’s tastiest music on vinyl from the evil clutches of a rhythm-hating overlord.

Dive into the world of metalworking with the Bridgeport Manual Mill class, where safety meets the art of basic metal milling operations. This class equips participants with the essential skills to master the Bridgeport Mill, a standard manual knee-type vertical milling machine, while creating a functional and stylish project: a pair of metal 6-sided dice.

What to Expect:

This comprehensive class begins with  1.5–2 hours of lecture and discussion , covering foundational knowledge and safety practices before heading to the shop floor. After the discussion, you’ll move to the machines for hands-on learning through a guided project.

Topics covered include identifying the locations and functions of safety mechanisms, efficient installation and removal of cutting tools, proper clamping procedures, startup and speed selection sequences, accurate squaring of the machine’s vise, and referencing the Machinists Handbook for tool selection, cutting speeds, and feeds.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Safety First : Master the use of safety mechanisms, including the milling machine's E-stop, to ensure a secure working environment.

  • Tool Mastery : Learn the art of swiftly installing and removing cutting tools, understanding proper clamping procedures, and selecting the right tools for the job.

  • Startup Sequences : Navigate startup and speed selection sequences for optimal milling performance.

  • Precision Techniques : Achieve accurate and safe squaring of the machine's vise and learn minor procedures for successful manual milling.
  • Hands-on Project : Apply your new skills to mill your own pair of custom metal 6-sided dice, a perfect beginner-friendly project that combines creativity and precision.

  • Problem-solving Skills : Discover techniques to salvage a part in case of mistakes or incorrect dimensions, ensuring a successful milling operation.

Prerequisite:

Participants must watch the following two videos before the class:

  1. Bridgeport Vertical Milling Machine Basics

  1. Metalworking Metrology

(Note: Participants must watch the two videos listed above. Anyone who has not watched the videos may be asked to leave, and no refund will be issued.)

Participants will receive a link to class materials in their confirmation email and are  strongly encouraged to review the content ahead of time  to get the most out of the in-person session.

Who Should Attend:

This class is open to individuals with no previous experience, providing a welcoming entry point into the world of manual milling.

Badge Earned:

Upon successful completion of this class and the online badging process, MakeHaven members will earn Bridgeport badge. Please allow 3-4 days for the update to appear on your profile.

This two-part class includes a follow-up Guided Making session where participants can continue their block projects or bring in another quilt to work on alongside the instructor and fellow makers.

This is a two-part class: November 2nd (instruction) and November 16th (guided making).

What to Expect

In the first session, students will dive into key principles of modern quilt design and practice constructing blocks using techniques like asymmetry, minimalism, and bold color placement. You’ll work hands-on with a sewing machine and learn how to design blocks that pop, using both guided patterns and improvisational methods.

The second session (November 16th) is a Guided Making day—participants can return to build on what they started in the first class or bring in a different quilting project to continue with support from the instructor and their fellow participants.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own fabric for the style and color palette they want to work in. A small selection of fabric will be available for practice and experimentation if needed.

Skills You’ll Acquire

• Design principles for modern quilting (negative space, asymmetry, bold color use)

• Techniques for piecing modern quilt blocks

• How to work with improvisational layouts

• Hands-on sewing machine use for creative piecing

• Pattern adaptation and block customization

What’s Provided

• Sewing machines and necessary tools

• Rotary cutters, rulers, and cutting mats

• Limited fabric scraps for practice

• Guidance and support across both sessions

Participants are highly encouraged to bring their own fabric to reflect their personal style and to get the most out of the creative process.
