Java Groove is a lively 4-piece swing-inspired band formed in 2015 by members of the former swing band The Shiny Lapel Trio. Featuring Dan Bernier (vocals/guitar), James Alio (guitar), Marc Iacobellis (bass), and Todd Fitting (drums), the band blends classic swing and jazz with a modern twist. Longtime friends and musicians from Guilford, the members reunited after their previous bands disbanded to create a smaller group with the energy of a full horn section. Java Groove’s repertoire ranges from Sinatra and Dean Martin to Sting and other contemporary tunes, all designed to get people dancing.
The library provides seating on the patio but you are welcome to bring your own chairs. In the case of rain, the concert will be moved inside to the Meeting Room. This program is free and open to all. Registration required.

Together they brandish all that is heavy, wielding the warring forces of profane incidence vs. inspired finesse.

Chase is a composer, drummer, and writer living in Brooklyn. His new album, Have Know Want, was released on May 10, 2024 on Biophilia Records.
His heroes include poets June Jordan and Victoria Chang, composers Joni Mitchell and Maurice Ravel, and drummers Billy Hart and Terri Lyne Carrington. A 2022 MacDowell Fellow in Composition, his work has been recognized by ASCAP, Avaloch Farm, the Boulder County Arts Alliance, the Café Royale Cultural Foundation, the Escape to Create Residency, and South Arts. His band has toured across the United States and given master classes at Oberlin Conservatory, the University of Denver, and Yale University. In 2022, he released his debut album, Portrait Imperfect, which was named one of the Best New Albums of the Year by Downbeat Magazine. A fervent advocate of cross-disciplinary collaboration and exploration, he debuted Walking in the City, a project with poets from across Brooklyn, at National Sawdust in June 2023.
He currently curates a vinyl listening series, “Dialogues,” with local musicians at Kissa Kissa in Crown Heights.

Art and Garden Inspirations
The Clinton Art Society (CAS) is pleased to present the annual Summer Juried Exhibition June 26 through July 30. “The event will be the highlight of our exhibition season as we celebrate visual arts and the vast talents of our member artists,” said CAS President Robin Hammeal-Urban. “We are honored to have renowned artist Anda Styler serve as our juror to select works and choose award recipients,” she added.
Join us for the opening reception on Sunday, June 29, from 2pm to 4pm and be a part of the visual celebration. The event is free, open to the public, and includes refreshments, live music, and inspiring art. The exhibition includes works in a wide range of artistic styles and mediums.
CAS was established in 1949 by a small group of professional artists dedicated to the growth of the arts in the region. “We’ve grown to become a vibrant influence in the arts community with members from across Connecticut and throughout New England,” Hammeal-Urban said. CAS sponsors exhibitions, critique events, and educational programs. Artists work in all fine-art media including painting and sculpture and new members are welcome.
The exhibit will be on view in the Andrews Memorial Town Hall at 54 E. Main Street in Clinton, CT from June 26 through July 30. Summer Juried Exhibition
Sarah Schneiderman from Glastonbury, Connecticut, is the featured artist at the Cheshire Public Library at 104 Main Street in Cheshire, CT, from July 2 through July 30, 2025. Her exhibit, “More Garbage Than Fish,” showcases assemblages made from trash that depict the fish she encountered while scuba diving. The artist is hosting a reception on Monday, July 7, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The show and reception are free and open to the public.
Ms. Schneiderman explains what influenced this series: “I started diving in 2013 after retiring from my corporate career. I fell in love with the creatures found in the ocean and learned that coral reefs are dying and water temperatures are rising. Having previously created art using found objects and trash, I continued this theme by making representational artwork of the fish I’ve seen while diving. These pieces reveal both the beauty and the sometimes haunting aspects of sea life. Beneath the surface beauty, I address the overwhelming presence of trash, particularly in our oceans, through the use of found and recycled materials. This includes everyday debris, and items people have given me such as bead and button collections, produce bags, and piano parts.”
The exhibit also offers information on how to reduce our plastic consumption.

Separated by 2,781 miles and on two different continents, Iraqi and Nigerian Christians share similar stories of persecution. From 2014-2018, portions of Northern Iraq were under the control of the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and many religious minorities, including Christians, experienced persecution and violence as a result. In the northern and central portions of Nigeria, violence towards Christians and other minority groups has also increased in recent years at the hands of Boko Haram and other groups.
The Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center is honored to share the stories of those displaced in Iraq and Nigeria through Among the Persecuted and Displaced — a collection of photographs taken by Stephen Rasche. The Knights of Columbus has sponsored some of Rasche’s work in both countries, bringing to light the atrocities inflicted on those persecuted for their faith.

In "Red, White, and Bruised," artist Sarah Schneiderman confronts the fractured healthcare and reproductive landscape in the United States. Schneiderman made these poignant assemblages from non-recyclable medical and other debris. This exhibit juxtaposes imagery of American flags with maps showing state-level abortion access. Each piece in this exhibit examines the promises of liberty and justice against the realities of unequal care, legislative control, and choice.
Sarah reimagines the flag—an emblem of national pride and unity—using discarded medical materials such as pill packs, gauze, surgical socks, and syringe tubes. These flags represent waste in America's healthcare system, both figuratively and literally. They explore the equality of those who have access to healthcare. Minorities, women, and people of lower socioeconomic status receive different care than wealthy white men. Alongside the flags, abortion access maps, constructed from similar debris, show in which states reproductive rights are banned or are safe and legal. These maps lay bare the consequences of political decisions on real bodies.
Together, these works ask: "What does it mean to pledge allegiance to a nation where geography, wealth, gender, and race determine who has access to care?"
"Red, White, and Bruised" invites viewers to reflect on national pride, laws, and personal health. It challenges us to envision a country where care and choice are universal rights, not privileges.

Kabbalat Shabbat service - Summer time
Released on the heels of her critically acclaimed 2018 album, With the Sun, Sunny War’s new album finds her a little bit older, a little bit more mature, but looking back on the rocky roads of her past with a surprising amount of nostalgia. Shell of a Girl, coming August 23, 2019 on Hen House Studios with vinyl released by Org Music, was written in a burst of creativity in Los Angeles, and marks a new transition period, with Sunny moving from the Venice Beach boardwalk, where she first made her name, to the streets of downtown Los Angeles. Holed up in a studio apartment in an old halfway house that’s rumored to be haunted, Sunny muses “I think I’ve heard ghosts, but I’ve always heard ghosts everywhere.” These ghosts are reflected in the songs on the new album, either through the ghosts of friends who’ve passed away, from overdose or accident, or in the ghosts of who she used to be. “I feel like I’ve tricked myself into trying to be a part of the system that I swore I’d never participate in,” she says. “Now I’m worried about moving from a studio to a one-bedroom. It bums me out when the thing I’m happy about is paying the light bill. I’m never happy about something that’s real anymore.
Growing up in Los Angeles’ punk scene, Sunny was hopping trains from a tender age, riding free on the rails and living homeless on the streets. Her music has always been raw, and she refuses to shy away from a brutally open honesty about the rougher parts of her life, but now that she’s gotten a modicum of comfort and routine, she finds herself looking back to what she remembers as the happiest time in her life. Far from her early days playing house shows with members of FIDLAR, and racing through punk sets with her band Anus Kings, Sunny insists she’s never lost touch with her punk roots, in fact she feels more punk than ever; “I’ve graduated to just hating everybody,” she says with a laugh.
Sunny War jokes that the songs on Shell of a Girl come from her attempts to write a radio-friendly single, inspired by wildly varied influences like commercial jingles that fascinated her as a kid, the cross rhythms of bossa nova guitar, even a peculiarly twisted version of circus classic “March of the Gladiators.” Recording again at Hen House Studios on Venice Beach with producer Harlan Steinberger and her musical collaborators Micah Nelson (Particle Kid) Aroyn Davis, Milo Gonzalez, Tato Melgar, Lesterfari Simbarashe, and Edith Crash rounding out the cast, Sunny moves freely between musical genres, anchored by her virtuosic, self-taught fingerstyle guitar work. Playing on a temperamental Guild acoustic guitar, that she’s named Big Baby for its tendency to squall and feedback, Sunny’s guitar work is as dazzling as ever, notes cascading out of the guitar in Art Tatum-ish flourishes.
Her songs cut deeply too, confessional at times, wounded at other times, and fiercely proud throughout. As Sunny explains the title song, “Shell,” “in relationships, people just treat somebody like shit. Then that person changes and they don’t recognize them anymore. If you keep attacking me, I’m going to morph into somebody who’s more defensive and more aggressive, so why are you surprised?” “Drugs Are Bad” attempts to reconcile Sunny’s own medicated childhood and our culture of medicating children with self-righteous parents who think that the only drug addicts are those that use street drugs. “Soul Tramp” speaks to the hobo’s urge to keep moving, to avoid routine, to keep from ever being bored. “A ‘soul tramp’ is somebody who constantly feels like they need to go somewhere all the time,” she explains. “You’re just fighting that feeling. The lyrics are inspired by train hopping. When I hopped trains, I was living off of food stamps and just drinking Night Train. Looking back now, I think that those were the happiest times of my life. Everything was so random. Something new was happening every day, it was always interesting.
Moving further into adulthood, Sunny War feels herself pulled back to the wild days of her youth, to the adventure and freedom we all remember, though rarely with the intensity that she lived it. But that freedom came with a price. “Most of my travelling friends died from ODing or liver failure,” she admits. “The drinking was a really big part of it, but also heroin. Almost everybody I know is dead. Then I think, why did I gravitate towards these kinds of people and then I think, was I supposed to be dead?” It’s a question she asks explicitly on “Rock n Roll Heaven”, reflecting that “I wasn’t really planning to live past 27, so now I’m like, OK what happens? I feel like that old gag where two kids are standing on each other’s shoulders with a trench coat on, pretending to be an adult. I kept wondering if I’m the only one pretending or…?” Of course, she’s not the only one pretending, but few other artists ask such honest questions with such an earnest curiosity.

Sarah Schneiderman from Glastonbury, Connecticut, is the featured artist at the Cheshire Public Library at 104 Main Street in Cheshire, CT, from July 2 through July 30, 2025. Her exhibit, “More Garbage Than Fish,” showcases assemblages made from trash that depict the fish she encountered while scuba diving. The artist is hosting a reception on Monday, July 7, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The show and reception are free and open to the public.
Ms. Schneiderman explains what influenced this series: “I started diving in 2013 after retiring from my corporate career. I fell in love with the creatures found in the ocean and learned that coral reefs are dying and water temperatures are rising. Having previously created art using found objects and trash, I continued this theme by making representational artwork of the fish I’ve seen while diving. These pieces reveal both the beauty and the sometimes haunting aspects of sea life. Beneath the surface beauty, I address the overwhelming presence of trash, particularly in our oceans, through the use of found and recycled materials. This includes everyday debris, and items people have given me such as bead and button collections, produce bags, and piano parts.”
The exhibit also offers information on how to reduce our plastic consumption.

Separated by 2,781 miles and on two different continents, Iraqi and Nigerian Christians share similar stories of persecution. From 2014-2018, portions of Northern Iraq were under the control of the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and many religious minorities, including Christians, experienced persecution and violence as a result. In the northern and central portions of Nigeria, violence towards Christians and other minority groups has also increased in recent years at the hands of Boko Haram and other groups.
The Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center is honored to share the stories of those displaced in Iraq and Nigeria through Among the Persecuted and Displaced — a collection of photographs taken by Stephen Rasche. The Knights of Columbus has sponsored some of Rasche’s work in both countries, bringing to light the atrocities inflicted on those persecuted for their faith.

In "Red, White, and Bruised," artist Sarah Schneiderman confronts the fractured healthcare and reproductive landscape in the United States. Schneiderman made these poignant assemblages from non-recyclable medical and other debris. This exhibit juxtaposes imagery of American flags with maps showing state-level abortion access. Each piece in this exhibit examines the promises of liberty and justice against the realities of unequal care, legislative control, and choice.
Sarah reimagines the flag—an emblem of national pride and unity—using discarded medical materials such as pill packs, gauze, surgical socks, and syringe tubes. These flags represent waste in America's healthcare system, both figuratively and literally. They explore the equality of those who have access to healthcare. Minorities, women, and people of lower socioeconomic status receive different care than wealthy white men. Alongside the flags, abortion access maps, constructed from similar debris, show in which states reproductive rights are banned or are safe and legal. These maps lay bare the consequences of political decisions on real bodies.
Together, these works ask: "What does it mean to pledge allegiance to a nation where geography, wealth, gender, and race determine who has access to care?"
"Red, White, and Bruised" invites viewers to reflect on national pride, laws, and personal health. It challenges us to envision a country where care and choice are universal rights, not privileges.

Using a photograph as reference, participants will use the softest of materials, wool roving, as if they were paint, along with a special barbed needle to create a felted landscape on a backing of raw silk. Students may bring their own landscape photographs (recommended size 8" x 10"), or use one provided by the instructor. $20 materials fee payable to instructor day of workshop.
Diane Cadrain is a Connecticut artist who uses fiber to create unique and beautiful images. Her work includes hand-painted fabric, felted fibers, machine piecing and quilting, hand embroidery, and beading.

Separated by 2,781 miles and on two different continents, Iraqi and Nigerian Christians share similar stories of persecution. From 2014-2018, portions of Northern Iraq were under the control of the militant group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), and many religious minorities, including Christians, experienced persecution and violence as a result. In the northern and central portions of Nigeria, violence towards Christians and other minority groups has also increased in recent years at the hands of Boko Haram and other groups.
The Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center is honored to share the stories of those displaced in Iraq and Nigeria through Among the Persecuted and Displaced — a collection of photographs taken by Stephen Rasche. The Knights of Columbus has sponsored some of Rasche’s work in both countries, bringing to light the atrocities inflicted on those persecuted for their faith.

Hands Off! Hands On Art
EveryBody Dances @ Yale Schwarzman Center brings local and visiting dance artists to our Dance Studio to teach Sunday masterclasses in jazz, hip hop, salsa, modern, contemporary, precision dance and more! All community members are welcome.
Beginning Sunday July 13, Jason Ramos of Baila Con Gusto CT leads a six-week summer dance series featuring salsa, merengue, and bachata. Join at any point during the series.
Jason is originally from Brooklyn, New York, born to parents who immigrated from Ambato, Ecuador. He began his journey into Latin dance as a recreational activity while at Central Connecticut State University. A few years later, dance took him into Massachusetts, New York, Italy, Spain, and the Dominican Republic to train with various instructors in their local social dance scenes.
Jason's social dance specialties include Salsa On1, Bachata (Dominican, Modern, and Sensual), and Merengue. Some of Jason's past artistic collaborations and credits include Nightfall, Ballet Theatre Company, Orquesta Afinke, Latin Heartbeat Orchestra, Riverfront Dance Festival, and The International Festival of Arts and Ideas. Jason has partnered with the Ulysses S. Grant Foundation at Yale, Movement Matters at Justice Dance Performance Project, Dirk Heidemman Ballroom Dance Studio, and Fred Astaire Dance Studios in Southbury and South Windsor.

In "Red, White, and Bruised," artist Sarah Schneiderman confronts the fractured healthcare and reproductive landscape in the United States. Schneiderman made these poignant assemblages from non-recyclable medical and other debris. This exhibit juxtaposes imagery of American flags with maps showing state-level abortion access. Each piece in this exhibit examines the promises of liberty and justice against the realities of unequal care, legislative control, and choice.
Sarah reimagines the flag—an emblem of national pride and unity—using discarded medical materials such as pill packs, gauze, surgical socks, and syringe tubes. These flags represent waste in America's healthcare system, both figuratively and literally. They explore the equality of those who have access to healthcare. Minorities, women, and people of lower socioeconomic status receive different care than wealthy white men. Alongside the flags, abortion access maps, constructed from similar debris, show in which states reproductive rights are banned or are safe and legal. These maps lay bare the consequences of political decisions on real bodies.
Together, these works ask: "What does it mean to pledge allegiance to a nation where geography, wealth, gender, and race determine who has access to care?"
"Red, White, and Bruised" invites viewers to reflect on national pride, laws, and personal health. It challenges us to envision a country where care and choice are universal rights, not privileges.

Sunrise New Haven General Body Meeting
Native American educator and storyteller Darlene Kascak, a member of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, will bring a big bag of artifacts for visitors to explore during a hands-on history experience, “Quinnetukut: Stories of Survival,” at the historic Pardee-Morris House. The free, all-ages NH250 event will take place on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at 2 p.m. (Rain date: Sunday, August 24, 2025). Register here.
Kascak is the educational outreach ambassador and traditional Native American storyteller at the Institute for American Indian Studies in Washington, Connecticut. At PMH, she will shed light on the misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding her ancestors using artifacts and other cultural items that demonstrate how Indigenous people live a sustainable lifestyle.
Among the treasures Kascak will bring are beaver, bear, raccoon, and skunk furs; deer hide; a turtle shell used as both calendar and bowl; tools made from bone; gourd rattles; a replicated Native American longhouse model; stone tools, and more. She notes, “Our culture believes that all living beings are equal and possess the same rights as humans. When we take an animal or plant’s life for sustenance, we honor and respect this gift by utilizing everything possible, ensuring nothing is wasted.”

Get ready to meet some cool art legends like Matisse, Picasso, and Van Gogh! In this fun-filled adventure, dive into their bold, colorful styles and learn how they created their famous works.
With instructor-guided projects, young people will explore different art techniques and create their own masterpieces. Along the way, they will discover new ways to express themselves and unleash their creative superpowers.
Tuition for this class includes a fee of $20 for materials provided by CAW.
Famous Artist Inspirations
Express yourself through color on canvas! Discover what oil paint is, how it works, and how to use it to make art. Learn the steps to start a painting, how to mix colors with a limited palette, and different effects to make with oil colors. Instruction will be given in short lectures, demonstrations, and individual coaching. Students will be working from still lifes and will create more than one painting over the course of the week. The tuition for this class includes a fee of $37 for basic materials provided by CAW.
Introduction to Oil Painting
Discover the joy of printmaking designed especially for young people. Collagraph printmaking is a hands-on art technique where participants create textured printing plates using everyday materials such as cardboard, fabric, leaves, and more. Students will learn about the basics of printmaking and how collagraphs work, explore textures and patterns while designing their unique printing plates. They will also learn about color, inking, and printing techniques to produce vibrant and creative prints. The tuition for this class includes a fee of $20 for basic materials provided by CAW.
