Join us in welcoming the author of this sweet picture book My Heart Speaks Kriolu, Stefanie Foster Brown.
More about the book:
On Saturday walks with her grandfather, a young girl connects with her Cabo Verdean heritage while learning about the true meaning of home in this moving debut picture book.
Papa always speaks of someday bringing his granddaughter back home to Cabo Verde. But the young girl has never set foot on their ancestral island’s faraway shores. And each time Papa urges her to speak Kriolu, the Portuguese creole native to the West African country, the girl’s tongue betrays her, and she stumbles over her own words. If she can’t even get the language right, can her grandfather’s home ever truly be hers, too?
But each Saturday afternoon when she helps guide her sight-impaired grandfather through their close-knit Massachusetts community, the girl swears she can smell, hear, feel Kriolu. And each Saturday she comes closer to discovering where home truly lies.
More about Stefanie:
Stefanie Foster Brown was born in New Haven, CT. She grew up the daughter of a preacher and teacher. And credits her parents with her love of reading and storytelling.
As a former school psychologist, Stefanie worked with students from preschool to high school. She often incorporated picture books into counseling sessions with students, which ultimately inspired her to write her own. Stefanie’s forthcoming picture books explore topics of family, connection, and love. Her debut, My Heart Speaks Kriolu, was inspired by her relationship with her grandfather and Cape Verdean heritage.
Stefanie resides in Connecticut with her husband and two daughters. When she is not writing, she enjoys growing her own flowers and vegetables.

Canyon’s journey into songwriting began early. Shortly after her birth, her mother renamed her from Emma to Canyon, inspired by the lyrics “crystal canyons” in Neil Young’s Thrasher—a choice that proved prophetic. By 3rd grade, Canyon was taking classical guitar lessons, immersed in pop radio and her mom’s cassettes while dreaming of performing on her own stage.
As time passed, Canyon’s indie folk roots evolved. Her passion for pop anthems and strong hooks expanded her sound, making it more modern and wide-reaching. Now a mother, she draws from life’s ups and downs—the messy, glorious moments—to create music that resonates deeply and aims straight for the heart. After a hiatus to focus on family, Canyon has teamed up with producer Rob Griffith (Bronze Radio Return) for her upcoming album, Just Wait, set to release summer of 2025. She’s not just writing songs; she’s crafting the soundtrack of modern motherhood, exploring meaning as a millennial, and reflecting the universal human experience with a unique blend of despair and stubborn optimism.

Join us on Zoom for a focused walkthrough of layered security for offices, warehouses, schools, and nonprofit facilities. We’ll compare camera placements, access control workflows, and monitoring handoffs that reduce false alarms and downtime. The session highlights how a commercial security installer coordinates planning, installation, and training so your team stays productive.
Operations managers, facility directors, and IT leads who oversee multiple sites or high-traffic entrances will benefit from practical examples. If your team is weighing upgrades to surveillance and access control, we’ll map simple steps to evaluate risks, prioritize projects, and budget without guesswork. Expect plain talk on coordinating with vendors, setting response protocols, and documenting change logs for audits.
We’ll show how camera coverage maps and event tags can streamline incident reviews, especially when paired with commercial security cameras installation for loading docks, lobbies, and shared corridors. You’ll see how maintenance schedules, user-permission tiers, and alert thresholds work together to cut noise and highlight what matters. Leaders can compare options for security system installation near me that align with staffing patterns and after-hours deliveries.
This is a live Google Meet with screen shares and a short Q&A at the end, designed for tight New Haven schedules. We’ll reference common scenarios from Downtown office towers, Science Park labs, and Long Wharf logistics hubs, including shift changes and contractor access. Teams evaluating sensor layouts or door schedules can also learn where burglar alarm installation fits into a layered approach alongside cameras and access control. After you register, you’ll get a calendar invite with the Meet link; join from your laptop or phone, and feel free to bring a colleague who handles day-to-day facility tasks.

The Extruder Express: A Journey into Clay Artistry
Exhibition open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm with free parking and admission EXCEPT Thursday, November 27 (Thanksgiving); Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve); and Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day).
For centuries people around the world have celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ and numerous traditions have been incorporated into the Christmas season. Advent calendars, Christmas trees, and the display of the crèche, the three-dimensional representation of the Nativity scene, are just a few of these traditions. These traditions also incorporate other important Christian figures and events in Christ’s life, such as St. Nicholas Day and the Feast of the Epiphany.
This Christmas, the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center presents the exhibit, The Spirit of Christmas, which features crèches and other artwork from around the globe celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and traditions and feast days during the season.

Exhibit | The Spirit of Christmas
Exhibition open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm with free parking and admission EXCEPT Thursday, November 27 (Thanksgiving); Wednesday, December 24 (Christmas Eve); and Thursday, December 25 (Christmas Day).
Many crèches, the three-dimensional representation of the Nativity scene, feature a diversity of settings and stable designs — the most common of which is an open-front wood structure. However, many artisans model their crèches after buildings and landscapes that are native to their homelands.
This exhibit includes a variety of crèches that showcase different examples of stables and mangers. In addition, it also highlights a handful of works whose settings have been customized for the figures they contain. One of these is the Neapolitan, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, by Cantone and Costabile of Naples, Italy. In addition, a brand-new crèche will be featured in this exhibit: The Nativity at New Haven's St. Mary’s Church, designed by US-based Navidad Nativities, Inc., with figures made in Italy by Original Heide.

EVER / AFTER
Marion Belanger and Martha Willette Lewis (Collaborators)
October 30 - December 8, 2025
Located in The Workshop Gallery, Building 3.
Opening Reception on Thursday, October 30th from 4-7PM
Regular Gallery Hours from 12-4 pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Ever/After is a collaborative multimedia art project that consists of photographs by Marion Belanger and ink paintings and collage by Martha Willette Lewis. This visual dialogue grew from their shared state of unease and concern regarding the climate/environmental crisis. Belanger makes photographs in the field and prints them on lightweight but durable rice paper that Lewis then soaks, stains, tears and paints upon. The added stress upon the photographic image (some which have already been altered by double exposure and intentional abstraction) symbolically references the damages and disturbances such as extreme storms, forest fires and extinctions that are now so evident in daily life. Manipulated, gilded, stained and torn, the works become artifacts bearing the impact of human touch, just as the land itself does. Fragile and beautiful, Ever/After is a visual lament for the seepages, shifts, losses, extinctions, and extractions made by humankind.
Belanger and Lewis have been collaborating since 2016. They created the permanent installation Insects & Plants: Excavating the Archive at the Connecticut Agricultural Experimental Station in New Haven. The Underneath, an immersive multi-media installation was commissioned by Artspace in 2016. Ever/ After is an ongoing series regarding the threatened environment, and Strange and Beautiful Sound is recent work centered on the coastline of Long Island Sound.

Join the New Haven Museum for a special Asian Heritage event highlighting some of the joyous celebrations brought to the Elm City from across Asia on Sunday, November 9, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The free event offers programing for all ages, featuring art, music, literature, and dance. Register here.
“As our world becomes more globalized, it is important for its citizens to appreciate cultural differences while celebrating our similarities,” says Lely Evans of the New Haven Chinese Cultural Cooperative, one of the event’s organizers. Evans notes that autumn brings out a lot of universal similarities—family, nostalgia, and love—shared by cultures that are far apart, adding, “We hope that this program will widen visitors’ views of the world.”
Asian Heritage Event Schedule:
3 p.m. Members of the New Haven Chinese Cultural Cooperative will present, “Celebrating the Harvest Moon” with traditional Chinese music, poetry, and dance performances. To celebrate the season of fall—often associated with the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, the harvest moon, and nostalgia in Chinese culture—the group will share a Teresa Teng favorite about the moon and love; a bi-lingual poem from North Song Dynasty; an energetic percussion song; a potato-digging harvest song from Shanxi; traditional Chinese dance, and more. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, families gather the same way Americans do at Thanksgiving. Similarly, because some are unable to make it home for the holiday, many Mid-Autumn Festival works are about nostalgia and homesickness.
4:15 p.m. Members of Yale Rangeela—Yale University’s first undergraduate Bollywood fusion dance team—will share South Asian culture with a variety of fused dance styles and their own vibrant energy.
5:15 p.m.. Jennifer Heikkila Diaz, co-chair of the Asian Pacific American Coalition of Connecticut, will hold a screening of, “Off the Menu: Asian America,” followed by a Q&A session on what it means to be Asian in America. The feature-length documentary offers a road trip into the kitchens, factories, temples, and farms of Asian Pacific America, exploring how their relationship to food reflects their evolving communities. “In Connecticut, our two largest groups under the Asian and Pacific Islander umbrella are the Chinese and Indian communities, and most people in those two communities celebrate one of these holidays,” says Diaz. “I hope the audience will learn more about our complex and diverse AAPI community—whether they are a member of it or not—and consider how identity and culture evolve, especially in diaspora communities.”

Schola Cantorum is a chamber choir that performs sacred music from the sixteenth century to the present day in concert settings and choral services around the world. It is sponsored by Yale Institute of Sacred Music and led by interim conductor Stefan Parkman. Masaaki Suzuki is the ensemble’s principal guest conductor. Open by audition to students from all departments and professional schools across Yale University, the choir has a special interest in historically informed performance practice, often in collaboration with instrumentalists from Juilliard415.
Since its founding in 2009, Juilliard415 , that school’s principal period-instrument ensemble, has made significant contributions to musical life in New York and beyond, bringing major figures in the field of early music to lead performances of both rare and canonical works by composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. With its frequent musical collaborator the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, the ensemble has performed throughout Scandinavia, Italy, Japan, Southeast Asia, the U.K., and India.

GMChorale will present Brahm’s “Liebeslieder Waltzes,” as well as contemporary pieces by James Mulholland, Morten Lauridsen and Shawn Kirchner, at the Santo Fragilio Performing Arts Center at Middletown High School on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. Each composer selected poetry that found its way into the music featured in GMChorale’s mainstage concert, “Love, Waltzes and Luminous Skies.” The selected pieces are connected in a variety of ways: musically, texturally, stylistically and thematically.
When Johannes Brahms composed his Liebeslieder Waltzes (Opus 52 and Opus 65), he turned for inspiration to Georg Friedrich Daumer’s Polydora, a collection of folksongs exploring the varied aspects of romantic love – longing, flirtation, devotion, tenderness, and sorrow, to name a few. Brahms introduces us to 32 of these poems and ends with a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe that sums up the pain and joy of love.
Five short thematically connected pieces have been added to the program. The Elm City Girls’ Choir will be singing “Dirait-on,” Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem set to music by Morten Lauridsen. GMChorale continues with a James Mulholland arrangement from his composition “Four Robert Burns Ballads.” “My love is like a red, red rose,” the first line of a ballad by the 18th Century poet Robert Burns, speaks of love and steadfast devotion. James Agee, a mid-20th Century screenwriter, film critic, and author, whose poem “Sure on this Shining Night” was set to music by Morten Lauridsen, offers an assurance of kindness in the luminous skies of night. For Shawn Kirschner’s arrangement of “Bright Morning Stars,” a tribute to familial love, he turns to a traditional Appalachian song. Finally, a hymn text by John Adam Granade (1763-1807), a preacher active in the Great Revival in the West two centuries ago, is set to new music in Shawn Kirchner’s “Sweet Rivers,” which extols a redeeming love.
Join us on Sunday, November 9, 2025, for this celebration of “Love, Waltzes and Luminous Skies,” under the baton of Artistic Director Joseph D’Eugenio. The Elm City Girls’ Choir will join GMChorale on stage, with Eric Trudel and Blake Hansen on piano. The concert begins at 4:00pm, but plan to arrive early to hear a 3:00pm lecture by Neely Bruce, which is included in the ticket price. Tickets are available online at www.gmchorale.org

This exhibition will be on view at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music’s Miller Hall at 406 Prospect Street, New Haven from October 9 - December 5 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12 - 4 p.m., except for Thanksgiving week, when the ISM is closed.
Lucasen Brown: Stanza presents a series of twenty intimate-scaled abstract paintings developed during Brown's time at Yale Institute of Sacred Music/Yale Divinity School (2023-2025). The exhibition also includes a selection of works on paper with corresponding poems by 2025 ISM graduate Emily Chan from a small book-length collaboration.
Each painting has an association for the artist: a life event, a place, a feeling, a person. Brown explores ways the painting process weaves memory, trauma and spiritual repair: "Wholeness, to me, is when I am just a painter in the world who allows a world of feeling into my abstract paintings—a place where everything belongs.” The paintings hold space for viewers to consider their own healing through faith, noticing, and remaining open to uncertainty.
Paint, for Brown, becomes both a surface and a subject. The artist hopes the paintings evoke corporeality, silence, interiority, and sacred everydayness. The repetition of marks on the painting surfaces is meditative and accretive.
The paintings are informed by textile, specifically Lenore Tawney's open-warp weavings; art movements including Minimalism and Pattern Painting and Decoration; and essays, namely Roland Barthes' theory of text and textile.
The exhibition traces the paintings’ transition from grid-based abstraction to a more intuitive and emotionally attuned process that pushes beyond the limitation of the grid. The artist realized his painting world, emotional and liberative, could no longer be confined to a grid.
Free and open to the public.
Exhibition curated by Lucasen Brown.
All are welcome to join us for an opening reception for this art exhibit on Wednesday, October 8 at 5 p.m.

From Frank Pepe’s original hat to celebrity-signed pizza boxes (including Gwyneth Paltrow and Yogi Berra!), if you love the crust, the crunch and the char of New Haven apizza, or simply have strong views on what comprises a good pie, you’ll find something to feed your personal pizza passion in the new exhibit “Pronounced Ah-Beetz,” open now at the New Haven Museum (NHM) through October 2027.
“Pronounced Ah-Beetz” examines the fun, the flavor and the history of pizza, including its origin as an affordable means of feeding workers in the fields of Italy, and how it became the food of the poor in the U.S. The Italian migration to New Haven gave way to Frank Pepe’s Pizzeria Napoletana, which gave birth to Sally’s Apizza, while a mile away Tony’s Apizza became Modern. How these three establishments became among the most iconically loved pizza restaurants in the country is a major focus.
While the exhibit highlights the “Big 3” original apizza spots in New Haven, it also extends through the family tree of New Haven pizzerias to present a picture of family, food and community that includes a host of other local pizzerias, including: Ernie’s, Zuppardi’s, BAR, Zeneli’s, Olde World, and the Big Green Pizza Truck, among others.

Enjoy the Christmas season at the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center through this exhibit, the supplemental exhibit Away in a Manger and a variety of programs, including our annual Christmastime Family Day. Discover more of our offerings at https://www.michaelmcgivneycenter.org/
Make the following offerings a part of your family’s holiday tradition!

Join Arnold Lehman for a timely discussion about critical issues confronting American museums today. Lehman also talks about his current book project, Hidden Treasures Across America (September 2026), which presents 100 exceptional but often under-recognized museums that represent ideas about the enduring value of museums and what makes them extraordinary places for community experiences. He reviews his time as Director of the Brooklyn Museum, the importance of building diverse audiences that reflect the community, and surviving the highly controversial “Sensation” exhibition of 1999–2000, which presented works by the YBAs, young British artists, from the collection of Charles Saatchi.
